This was one of the most offensive things I've ever heard from a Labour MP (and that's saying something!) As a pub landlord, and employer, I find this attitude absolutely disgraceful from a load of career politicians who've never done a day's work in their lives! @EmmaforWycombe should hang her head in shame! I get up and go to work to pay HER wages, but she thinks I'm not a working person?!! 😡 @GBNEWS

I agree with every word of this.
Slavery was an evil in which people from every continent and region participated. We should be honest about the whole history, not select the parts that are politically convenient today, especially given Britain's leading role in ending the transatlantic slave trade.
If Caribbean countries are asking Britain for a formal apology for Britain’s role in the transatlantic slave trade, will they also be asking the same of the descendants of African kingdoms, rulers and merchants who captured, sold and profited from the trade?
On demands for reparations, whether through cash or debt relief, we have been down this track before. Twenty-five years ago, Jubilee 2000, Drop the Debt and Make Poverty History argued that cancelling the debts of poorer countries would give them a fresh start. More than $100 billion of debt was eventually written off, but many of those countries have since built up even bigger debts. Labour are already spending too much on Britain's welfare state, now is not the time for Andy Burnham to be providing global welfare.
There is no reason British taxpayers today should be held financially responsible for things that happened generations before any of us were born. And I have even less patience for political elites in commonwealth countries who don’t know how to make their own citizens prosperous now looking for another opportunity to blame Britain.
As Prime Minister, Andy Burnham should be Britain’s greatest defender. Instead, he is writing articles saying we need to confront our history (as if we haven't done enough of that) and considering another formal historical apology. Tony Blair already expressed Britain’s deep sorrow and regret for our role in the slave trade nearly twenty years ago. There is no need to do so again.
This is all another navel-gazing distraction. The Commonwealth should be looking forward, not endlessly backwards. That means economic partnerships to make us all richer and deeper military and security cooperation against common threats. If every Commonwealth summit becomes an exercise in presenting Britain with demands for cash then we need to start asking if it is worth the effort.

What an insult!!
According to Labour “Employers aren’t working people”
Shocking ignorance. Employers risk their own money, work all hours, sacrifice family time and put everything on the line to create jobs and pay wages.
What exactly does Labour think employers do all day? Sip Bacardis on a beach.
We are doomed, this shows Labour has no idea what it takes to grow an economy or the vital role employers play. That’s why they will keep punishing them.

Educate yourself Kay.
Your lefty virtue-signalling about how bad our country’s history was may have been welcome on Sky News and at your Covid parties.
But the truth is that slavery- indefensible as it was- was the norm many centuries ago. The Romans, the Egyptians, the Dutch and even the Africans themselves all took part in the brutal trade.
And you should know that Brits were enslaved too. By the Romans, Irish, Anglo-Saxons, Vikings and the Barbary cosairs.
Your ignorance wouldn’t be much comfort for the women imprisoned for months in freezing, brutal conditions, taken from their families by raiders on the British Isles in the 11th century.
If you need some help learning more, read my book, ‘Patriot: Empire, betrayal and hope’.
I’m sure your words would have been of great comfort to the women imprisoned for months in those stinking, cramped dungeons, taken out at the governor’s pleasure or left in the blistering sun without food or water if they resisted his advances, before being marched through the Door of No Return.

I'll be cancelling my @Telegraph subscription, without a doubt! If I wanted another leftist bullshit rag to pass the time, I'd read the @guardian.
Just to compound the UKs terminal decline... @GreggsOfficial have ruined the festive bake by changing the recipe. What's the actual point of this country now??
But threatening to hand all meaningful power back to the European Union at the same time? Do fuck off. We didn't all float down the Manchester ship canal on a rivita, like your Prime Minister has. So stop taking us all for the moronic cretins that make up your front bench!! We see you! And we see your lies!!
If a cunt like you can blag their way into @10DowningStreet, then I'm fairly sure a successful businessman like @ZiaYusufUK can offer the country far more than the original Spin Doctor can! You literally made a career out of bullshitting the public, so your high horse is pretty much legless right now!
I have heard it from far better people than you and they were wrong too. What I enjoyed was seeing you running away from an argument about Brexit because you would rather talk about anything else. And I loved the smile being wiped from your face when the young woman tore apart your net zero BS. You’ve not nice suits and nice shoes but you’ve got
more chance captaining the Sri Lankan cricket team than you have of becoming Home Secretary.

I’m impressed Labour found a pub that they haven’t forced to close and one that actually let them in.
