I love to have a great conversation about TTRPGs , I just want to share the joy of tabletop RPGs with the world. I probably don't fit your narrative.

👿The dungeon hates you. Bring torches. 🔥 Grimshaw is the turn-based, old-school party dungeon crawler I've been building. Treasure only counts once you get it home. Not out yet, but here's what it is and why I'm making it. #gamedev optionalrule.com/2026/10/15/…

Great breakdown of why 4e failed by @mikemearls My additions: A TTRPG is more than sales, it's the community that drives sales. Yes, setting books don't sell as well, but they establish a base shared experience, etc. Thread 🧵 youtube.com/watch?v=lBgNSWWC…

DnD will never be a corporate level success as a game. A small number of people drive the experience (the GM) by buying the books. So it's a feature of the hobby that only a fraction of the group will convert to a sale.

4e is also the line for me where WotC started to pursue an imaginary audience. We think that came in around 2020, but I would argue it came in with 4e and 2020 was just a change in which imaginary audience.

The crew? Assembled. The dice? Ready! What could possibly go wrong? The first episode of our special Cyberpunk Pen & Paper session is here, with the one and only Mike Pondsmith from @RTalsorianGames running the game! youtu.be/PBmkJbK3NGw

Correction, its a medium-rare corpse. We're not going to eat it raw, we're not savages.
Alright, you talked me into it!!! Corpse sandwich Corpse and eggs Corpse wrapped lamb chops Corpse wrapped duck The picture isn't even bacon, but I don't expect these pudding brains to understand that. 🤷‍♂️😜

A great IP like Mass Effect shouldn't die because the studio can't manage itself. There should be some kind of abandonment clause that allows fans to continue it. This "if I can't love you, nobody will" approach is terrible.

They would be awesome, that's what would happen.

Spent the night sending my adventuring party through a meat grinder of traps in Grimshaw. Pits, spiked pits, falling rocks, scything blades, arrow traps and poisoned needles are all in. Spot one first and you can set it off with a 10'-pole. Nobody has to stand on it. #gamedev

The vision of a game development studio is in its people. Not its name, not its technology, not its valuation. Its people. Studios come and go but the people carry on. I look forward to the great games they will create. #gamedev #bioware

Sad event, but Bioware ended years ago. I pray for a soft landing for the people effected.

Fun time last night building out the Journey system for Grimshaw. Characters can be guide, scouts, hunters, guards, or quartermaster. The real choice is what you leave uncovered. No guide? The storm takes its full toll in rations and days. #gamedev

Heading out, the road sets how you reach the dungeon: wounded, short on rations, worn or heartened. Heading home, your haul is at stake, and a hard trip could mean weeks of recovery in town. Risk a reckless route for better finds?

Game development works best using a Domain Design methodologies which are a prefect fit for AI Agents. The disconnect is that indie game development has been gated by technology for so long, many people still assume Spec Driven Development is the way to go. It's not. #gamedev

spent too much time on a small lighting/wink-out effect for torches in Grimshaw but I'm happy with it.

Latest updates in Grimshaw this week. Wandering Encounters are in, including attracting them when you make noise (bashing a door or chest, etc). Lots of small tweaks like lights fading in and out instead of on/off. Big update to the design documents this week.
