The UK media needs to move on from its obsession with Barnier The world has changed, the EU and the UK have changed. Time for some fresh European voices to weigh in and provide their perspective

You cannot have a Shadow Minister who is not on the front bench of the Official Opposition and who is not even in Parliament. Over 11 years an MP and still clueless about how Government works, just as you were when regretfully you were part of it for rather too long.
Great to join the team and listen to Danny, Nigel and our new Shadow Armed Forces Minister, Angus MacIntyre today. And to meet hundreds of our wonderful veterans!

This is not the "free market". This is "limited liability". The shareholder's liability for the company is limited to the capital they have put in. It's wholly possible to have a "free market" with "unlimited liability". That's how a partnership works (an LLP is a limited liability partnership, a partnership is not liability limited). It's also how Lloyd's used to work and didn't everyone love that when those last cufflinks were taken. The disadvantage of an unlimited liability marketplace is that there would be no diversification of investment and therefore also very few large scale institutions. Who would want to be liable, to that last cufflink, for every company in a 200 investment portfolio? Like, you know, our pension fund should be diversified? And how many organisations would be able to large scale their capital requirements if they couldn't call upon some small fraction of the investing of tens of thousands of people? Limited liability is a great idea for having a well functioning investment market. But it's not the same as the free market at all.

One part of the c. half a billion reduction in business admin burdens confirmed at the Budget. Good to see it getting a write-up in the FT.

Having won an election because people hated inflation, I simply would not have imposed tariffs, badgered the Fed for rate cuts, run enormous budget deficits and thrown in a Middle Eastern war. But I appreciate there are different schools of thought.

Waking up to some incredible results from US Midterms. A massive and welcome rebuttal of Trump and Trumpism. Heaven knows how he will respond but it’s one hell of a message the American people have sent him. The decent civilised rest of the world will be glad and relieved

🚨 New deals on food and drink, emissions trading and youth mobility are expected at the UK-EU Leaders' Summit on Friday 20 November. But what does this mean for British business? @William_Bain spoke to @JustinOnWeb on @BBCr4today to set out the benefits we all could see. 👇

Significant development on the EU-UK Agri Food Deal. Looking forward to reading the draft text when it is made public
NEW Draft deal on UK-EU food and agrifood exports (veterinary agreement / SPS) done and circulated to EU27 member states ahead of Council (coreper) meeting in Brussels tomorrow. 200 page legal texts on this, and emissions trading, although square brackets remain on numbers for youth experience scheme. Transition to dynamic alignment agreed in some areas where food standards have diverged. 15 page draft Joint Statement for Nov 20th summit also circulated referencing defence, security cooperation and reassurance over Made in Europe agenda. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cmp3…

Polling on Free Movement of Persons with the EU 🇪🇺 shows UK 🇬🇧 public is broadly supportive, but framing matters 👇 @RestoreFOM
🧵Polling suggests free movement might be far less of a barrier to public in rejoining the EU than it was a reason for leaving. But how sensitive is that to framing and what free movement actually means to people? At top level - 44% support FoM, 24% oppose. But..

Clearest evidence yet of Reform’s pivot to a more populist interventionist economic platform and willing to be excesses of capitalism critical. IMO that always made sense given where their likely voter pool is (socially right, economically statist) than trying to out free market the Tories on the economic right
12,000 jobs at Poundland are on the line. Wall Street shouldn’t be allowed to destroy a major British business to satisfy their investors. Burnham needs to act.

Struggle to see why a policy position on the ECHR should disqualify someone from standing as Mayor of London & as we have seen from our current & a previous Prime Minister, electorally successful Mayors usually have some independence from the Party line bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cq78…

The ECHR protects your right to the peaceful enjoyment of your property. That matters when a Government elected on just 34% of the vote has MPs talking about ‘seizing’ people’s homes. Fundamental rights should not depend simply on who has a Commons majority. – at East Ham, London
I said it in 2020 and I’ll say it again. If you leave a home empty long-term in the middle of a housing crisis, it should be seized. Today’s announcement is great news.

@JAHeale here is a summary: she announced £100 billion of uncosted energy ‘support’. The markets and the party realised she was a nut job and financially illiterate. And she was, mercifully, ejected. She is now an international embarrassment with zero self awareness.
New: former PM Liz Truss will publish her second book next Monday “Bank Job” “Timed to coincide with the Burnham Government’s first Budget, it lifts the lid on what really happened around the Mini-Budget in 2022, challenging the establishment narrative and examining in particular the role of the unaccountable Bank of England”

Wow, more Republicans than Democrats now want state ownership of businesses. I guess national conservatives put the "nation" in "nationalization".
Two years ago, what share of GOP voters would agree with government ownership of companies? Now 29% of GOP voters do. More than Democrats. This must be reversed. Those who pushed for this may come to regret it if America becomes a socialist country.

Badenoch also hits an all time approval rating high, up 3 to +5. Burnham is down 5 to +11, Davey is down one to -11, Lowe remains steady at -15, (though less than half give a firm view on Davey/Lowe) Farage is down 2 to -26 and Polanski is down a lot 7 to -35- his lowest for us.

Shooting unarmed civilians is murder. I find it astonishing that a man of this military seniority argues for murdering civilians.
Major-General Julian Thompson, who commanded 3 Commando Brigade during the Falklands War, on the small boats crisis: "We could stop them tomorrow if we really had the guts. I'd shot them, sorry but I would." "We're wet. I think there's going to be a revolution."
