Walker: "I nearly bought a wool jumper in town. £140. Nice work if you can get it."
Farmer: "I got about £2 for the fleece."
Walker: "£2?"
Farmer: "Per sheep, per year. Clipped it off her in two minutes, rolled it, bagged it, drove it to the depot. The cheque for the whole flock didn't cover the diesel."
Walker: "Then who's getting the £140?"
Farmer: "Not me, not the shearer. He costs me more per sheep than the wool fetches. I pay to have it taken off."
Walker: "So you lose money shearing."
Farmer: "Every year. And I can't not shear, or she cooks in July and the flies eat her alive. The wool's a welfare job that used to be an income."
Walker: "Sell it yourself, then. Cut out the middleman."
Farmer: "Not allowed. By law it goes through the board. Has done since 1950. I can keep a fleece for the wife to knit with, and that's about the extent of my freedom."
Walker: "So where does it go?"
Farmer: "Washed in Bradford, if we're lucky. Shipped to China, spun, knitted, shipped back, and sold to you with a label about heritage. By the time it's in the window there are eleven people between us and I'm the only one who met the sheep."
Walker: "That's mad."
Farmer: "My grandfather paid the rent on the wool cheque. I pay a man to take it away. Same sheep, same hill, same jumper in the window. Only the price of the farmer went down."
Walker: "What would fix it?"
Farmer: "You buying the jumper. And asking them where the other £138 went."

Customer: "No veal, thanks. I know what happens to the calves."
Butcher: "So do I. Which bit do you know?"
Customer: "Crates. Taken off the mother, kept in the dark, can't turn round."
Butcher: "Banned here in 1990. This one had straw, a shed, and other calves to annoy for eight months. Rose veal, we call it. Pink, not white."
Customer: "It's still a baby cow."
Butcher: "It's a dairy bull calf. Where do you think they went before people bought veal?"
Customer: "Reared for beef?"
Butcher: "A Holstein bull doesn't make beef worth the feed. For years the answer was a bolt in the head at a day old. Tens of thousands a year, in this country, shot in the pen because nobody would eat them. The industry only promised to stop that a couple of years ago."
Customer: "That's horrific."
Butcher: "That's the price of a latte. Every pint of milk needs a cow in calf every year, and half the calves are boys."
Customer: "So eating the veal..."
Butcher: "Gives him eight months in a shed instead of eight minutes. The customer who won't touch veal and buys a flat white has made a choice. She just didn't get told what it was."
Customer: "I'll take a kilo."
Butcher: "Good. And the next person who tells you veal is cruel, ask them what they take in their coffee."

Hi. Meteorologist here.
There is no such thing as a “heat storm.”
Just more made-up BS.
Since the 1960s, carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has increased by more than 30%. The average portion of the planet likely to be covered by heat storms and heat waves has risen more than 12-fold. Explore the first in our series on this climate phenomenon reut.rs/4sl2Kdi

Because a certain kind of man believes that not getting everything he wants from women is oppression. This applies both to incels and to the type of trans-identified man who insists that speech, laws and physical spaces should be reconfigured around his self-image.

Nine in ten American strawberries come from a few valleys in California where the soil is killed with a First World War gas before every planting, and the fields are visible from the road because they are wrapped in plastic to keep the gas in.
Chloropicrin was made for the trenches. It was a lung and eye agent, a vomiting gas, fired in shells to force men out of their masks. Now it is injected into the ground at Watsonville and Oxnard every year, under tarps that hold the fumes down for a week, and it does to the soil what it did to a trench: everything in it dies, the fungi, the bacteria, the worms, the insects, until the dirt is as sterile as a hospital tray. Then the strawberries go in, on raised beds of plastic, fed by drip line with everything a living soil would have given them, and the plastic and the gas go in again next year, because a dead soil has no defence against the one disease that gets through.
For forty years the gas was methyl bromide, which eats the ozone layer, and when the world banned it in 2005 California's strawberry growers got themselves an exemption and kept using it for another decade, the last major crop on earth to do so. Chloropicrin was the replacement, and the state's own pesticide regulator lists it among the commonest causes of farmworker poisoning in California. The men who apply it are mostly undocumented, the drift has emptied a school in Monterey County, and the strawberry has topped the list of the most pesticide-contaminated produce in America for most of the last decade.
Every year the industry calls it a heart-healthy antioxidant superfood, and every year the field it came from is gassed.
The cow in the pasture next door has never once needed the soil under her sterilised. The strawberry cannot be grown at that scale without it, and the war gas is the price of a punnet in January.

Geopolitics is about power and those at that high table are America, Russia and China.
Ascendants are India, Brazil, perhaps, Saudi, Turkey and Iran. Descendants are the EU.
If you’ve not at the high table, you’re on their agenda.
Canada chose its allies…poorly.
The upcoming Canada–EU Summit in Montreal, writes Don Tapscott, could launch an alliance of middle powers to govern AI on their own terms. thestar.com/business/opinion…

🇨🇦 THEY STOOD ON GUARD
HMCS KOOTENAY — OCTOBER 23, 1969
57 years ago today, nine Canadian sailors lost their lives in one of the darkest chapters of Royal Canadian Navy history.
On the morning of October 23, 1969, HMCS Kootenay was conducting full-power trials approximately 200 miles off the southwest coast of England.
At 8:21 a.m., a catastrophic failure in the ship’s starboard gearbox triggered a violent explosion. A wall of flames swept through the engine room, while deadly smoke spread into the ship’s passageways and cafeteria.
The situation was desperate. Firefighting equipment had been destroyed or rendered inaccessible, electrical systems were damaged, and the ship temporarily lost its ability to radio for help.
Yet the surviving sailors refused to abandon their shipmates.
Crew members battled the flames, organized rescue efforts and kept the ammunition magazine cool to prevent another explosion. With conventional breathing equipment unavailable, several ship’s divers strapped on scuba tanks and ventured below to assist in the rescue.
Helicopters from accompanying Canadian warships brought additional firefighters and equipment. By 10:30 a.m., the fire was finally extinguished.
Eight sailors died in the initial disaster. A ninth, Petty Officer Lewis Stringer, succumbed to his injuries two days later. Fifty-three others were injured.
We remember the nine sailors who never came home:
🇨🇦 PO Lewis J. Stringer, 29
🇨🇦 LS Pierre S. Bourret, 24
🇨🇦 PO Eric George Harman, 42
🇨🇦 LS Thomas Gordon Crabbe, 29
🇨🇦 OS Michael Allen Hardy, 21
🇨🇦 CPO Vaino Olavi Partanen, 41
🇨🇦 LS Gary Wayne Hutton, 24
🇨🇦 OS Nelson Murray Galloway, 19
🇨🇦 CPO William Alfred Boudreau, 40
The HMCS Kootenay disaster remains the worst peacetime accident in Royal Canadian Navy history. The tragedy led to significant improvements in naval safety, while several crew members were later recognized for their extraordinary bravery.
Today, October 23, is commemorated as HMCS Kootenay Day in Nova Scotia.
Nine sailors. Nine lives. Nine families forever changed.
Their courage, sacrifice and service to Canada will not be forgotten.
They stood on guard for Canada. We remember. 🇨🇦
