What a betrayal. The US is not good to its word.
Breaking News: The Trump administration has detained dozens of Afghan immigrants in Louisiana — including relatives of those who helped the U.S. military — and plans to deport them to Afghanistan, according to U.S. officials. nyti.ms/4jPVvrw

The Greek ambassador joked about being late on the news because straw poll results had already been leaked. It’s up to Latvia now to schedule the next one.
Today’s straw poll for UN secretary-general wasn’t color coded, so there’s still no consensus candidate—but it looks like the race was much less shook by the “October Surprise” than expected.
Rebeca Grynspan still leads, reportedly stepping up to 11 encourage and 4 discourage. Rafael Grossi moves into second place and looks viable again, with 9 encourage, 4 discourage, and 2 no opinion. Burkett in third place and newcomer Nusseibeh in fourth.

These poll results reaffirm my Oct. 7 tweet, that the race is a Grossi-Grynspan contest. The UNSC now needs to move swiftly to color-coded ballots. Time for the UNSC to select the candidate with the necessary & proven peace & security credentials to lead the UN. @UN @pass_blue

Update: I just received the complete out come and Lana Nusseibeh is in 4th, not third place. Carolyn Rodrigues Birkett of Guyana finished third with 8 encourages, 6 discourages and 1 no opinion

CELAC making very clear its views on why the next UNSYG should be from its region. @UN @TheUNTimes time @pass_blue @moscosorrm
More than 30 ambassadors from the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) gather at UN media stakeout to voice one, unified message: The next UN Secretary-General should be a national from Latin America and the Caribbean, citing both fairness across world regions and geographic rotation. CELAC noted that during the selection process thus far in the Security Council, candidates from Latin America and the Caribbean have consistently drawn the strongest support.

What is unique about Nusseibeh's candidacy is that the discussion already is centering less around her qualifications than around the policies of her country. This has not been the case for the other six candidates.

Pretty big deal, as you can imagine this is a candidate who won't get a P5 veto and may strongly be favored by at least one P5 state. Also a real test of the unspoken norms at the UN, where it's supposed to be Latin America's "turn" for SG
#BREAKING: Lana Nusseibeh, minister of state for foreign affairs of Arab power and close US ally the UAE, told Reuters that she had enter the race to become the 10th United Nations secretary-general, promising to bring the global body's relevance to global diplomacy back.

The next leader of the United Nations will need to steer the global body through a time of crises.
In CFR's series profiling candidates for UN Secretary-General, Carolyn Rodrigues Birkett, the former minister of foreign affairs of Guyana, talked to us about why she's suited for this moment.
Coming from a small state, Rodrigues Birkett says she understands how the UN’s problems ripple outward: a liquidity crisis, off-track development goals, and growing criticism from other smaller member states that UN staff isn't geographically representative.

Lot of buzz around Lana Nusseibeh, the former UAE ambassador to the U.N., and a growing expectation that after months of rumors she will step into the race. UAE has its own challenges, given its role in backing Sudan's RSF insurgency, which is accused of mass atrocities.

To be clear, the only reason I was able to reach Heidi was because young Palestinians provided cover with rocks against machine-gun- and tear-gas-wielding settlers and soldiers. It’s those kids, not the settler terrorists, who the IDF was hunting after the attack.
