Yes. Some clergy have developed a positively maniacal attitude about the altar being bare. It’s in part a product of poor formation, and in part psychological defects that probably should have weeded out the rigid obsessive.
Replying to @canonlawyered
This is a common disposition for clerics of a certain age. It goes with the oddly extreme interpretation that "nothing should be on the altar except what's needed for Mass" guys who have been taught it means no candles, cross, missal stand, etc. It's what seminary taught them.

This appointment may be the worse of the recent American ones. After the Uncle Ted scandal, his old diocese deserves a bishop with zero ties to McCarrick. At the very least, journalists should ask the new bishop what he witnessed as a McCarrick seminarian.
Pope Leo XIV appointed Newark auxiliary bishop Michael Saporito as the new bishop of the Diocese of Metuchen, New Jersey. Saporito succeeds the then-Bishop James Checchio after he was appointed to lead the Archdiocese of New Orleans in February. ewtnnews.com/vatican/pope-le…

Some railway clerks of yesteryear are bishops today.
The greatest insult my late father had was to call a man a railway clerk. In the 1970s everyone knew the type. Talentless and charmless, the only pleasure in his life was to exercise power. This power consisted in printing your ticket sufficiently slowly that he ensured that you would miss your train. There are no railway clerks now. They have all become senior civil servants and ministers of state.

Given that most Cathedrals and college chapels have Evensong at 5 or 6pm, and the duration of the service is about 45 minutes the likelihood is that one of the first people to sing those words in a Choral Evensong was a Catholic. What a delicious irony.

“Between now and February, the pontiff will have to appoint new prefects for of the Dicasteries for the Laity, Family and Life, Causes of Saints, Promotion of Christian Unity, Divine Worship, and Clergy. “(Clergy is somewhat less urgent, since Cardinal You, who heads it, turns 75 this November and his term could be extended.) “The cardinals leading the other dicasteries have long since passed retirement age: Farrell is 79, Semeraro 78, Koch 76, Roche 76. Changing the major department heads in short order represents a significant change of guard, and his picks for their successors will be very telling.”

If these sorts of posts were accompanied by three clear examples of ‘confrontation’ by ‘trads’ I’d begin to take them seriously. As it is they are just looking for clicks. Faff off.
The big problem is that Trads have to stop being so confrontational toward the Pope and the Church in general. Whether they like it or not, any permission or favor toward the TLM by the Vatican was only supposed to be for the liturgy itself—not for using it as a rallying point to constantly criticize and attack Vatican II and modern Church policies. Doing that just increases the likelihood of continued hostility toward the Latin Mass by the hierarchy and could possibly lead to its eventual suppression. Love of and desire for the TLM must be separated from a desire to reject Vatican II. If Trads are incapable of this, then the future of the old Mass (at least in union with Rome) is bleak.

It is now beyond dispute that Vatican Secretariat of State treated the SP pilgrims with scandalous contempt. But I’m afraid the buck stops with Pope Leo, who should not have permitted this to happen.
Today, at the meeting of the organizers of the Summorum Pontificum Pilgrimage, Christian Marquant commented on the controversy stirred up on social media by people who wish to sow confusion: 1. The request to use the altar of the Chair in St. Peter’s Basilica was made on the day of Bishop Athanasius Schneider’s audience with Pope Leo at the Vatican, on 18 December 2025, ten months and one week before the Pilgrimage. 2. On 7 August, eight months after the request, a negative response arrived from the Secretariat of State of the Holy See. No alternative date was suggested for the Mass, contrary to what's claimed by those people hungry for the limelight. 3. On 8 September, Father Claude Barthe, chaplain of the Pilgrimage, sent a request to the Secretariat of State asking whether the Pilgrimage might enter the Basilica to pray at the tomb of St. Peter, as had happened in the fourteen previous years, even when no Mass was celebrated there: “May we nevertheless, on the coming 24 October, enter the Basilica in procession, pray for the Pope at the Confession, and adore the Blessed Sacrament at the Altar of the Chair? The Basilica’s sacristy informs us that this would be possible at 1 p.m., should Your Excellency grant us the necessary permission.” 4. On 30 September, the response was sent by post, delivered a few days later to the Apostolic Nunciature in Paris, and only reached Father Barthe on 12 October, less than two weeks before the Pilgrimage. The response was negative. The pilgrims would not even be allowed to enter the Basilica to pray. 5. This was not disclosed immediately at that time because the organizers still tried to obtain permission for the group to enter the Basilica, given the importance of that gesture and the scandal it would represent for the pilgrims, and for Catholics in general, to be denied entry in the context of a pilgrimage. Since these efforts were unsuccessful, the announcement was made one day before the procession that led the pilgrims to St. Peter’s Square. 6. Christian Marquant lamented the confusion stirred up by people who have no connection whatsoever with this initiative of Catholic faithful, and he emphasized that the Summorum Pontificum Pilgrimage has at its heart love for the Pope and for the Catholic Church. Long live Christ the King! Viva Cristo-Rei!

I’ve often reflected on the fact that ISIS marched through the Middle East and basically ended the possibility of generational Christianity there. They slaughtered so many Christians and destroyed so many churches that the only way the Christians in the Middle East will ever recover their population is by converting Muslims, which, of course the Muslims make illegal, punishable by death. Do you think of a Christian wandered into a mosque and opened fire and killed Muslims during their worship they wouldn’t mention the Christians in the headline? I really don’t think so. I could be wrong, I’m wrong all the time. Whatever the case, Islam has a serious problem and Christians are paying a bit bitter, bitter price for it. Headlines like this don’t help make the problem as clear as the blood of these innocent people does. Alas

Pope Francis *was* a "late manualist". Amoris laetitia is a late manualist document - The archetypical late manualist John C. Ford SJ could have written it.
If I judged Catholicism and what it taught only based on Trads on twitter, I'd believe that Catholics have no real room for the development of doctrine, no real Christology of other religions, no room for Protestants, and I'd think that we must embrace the most pessimistic view about mortal sin and handle every theological question as a late manualist. I'd also assume the last handful of Pope's were pretty ignorant and were barely the Pope, if at all. My confidence in Catholicism would go way down. Thankfully, this isn't the only form of Catholicism. There is an inclusive, optimistic, and generously ecumenical version that also has an evangelical spirit. I hope people get to see this type of Catholicism. If you spend a lot of time watching Pope Leo and Pope Francis, you will get to see a great representation of it at least. Below, I'll post some book recommendations.

The problem with a lot of the Conciliar era enthusiasms is that they placed too much faith in the idea that human nature had changed, and identified the incorrect culprits for the low comprehension and engagement with the Mass by the laity.
Even with amplification, vernacular, and an overlong homily, your average Mass goer couldn’t tell you what the lessons were about 5 minutes after Mass. There was wisdom in the old lectionary…

How can one be so disingenuous and excuse bad behavior? Diocesan Trads are some of the meekest people in the Church. They do their utmost not to provoke any turmoil. A single heterodox German bishop causes more trouble to the Church than a million lay faithful, yet his masses and pilgrimages remain unimpeded. Let’s stop blaming the victims of ecclesiastical abuse: ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.
The big problem is that Trads have to stop being so confrontational toward the Pope and the Church in general. The Roman Missal itself has six pages of prayers to be said after Mass. So much of the 1970s liturgical status quo is gaslighting.
I’ve heard some things from bishops over the years. But “it is not appropriate to add a prayer to the most perfect prayer, which is the Mass,” is an absolute new one for me. pillarcatholic.com/p/knoxvil…

Anyone less deserving of the term ‘grifter’ would be hard to imagine, and to be accused of such by @CoffinMedia is a tad rich, to put it mildly.
Not sure how earning less than $5K a year from writing about the Catholic Church makes me a grifter. I surrendered my income when I walked out of the Catholic Herald because it was being destroyed by clowns (now departed). I have no Substack, no YouTube, certain not a ‘media company’ like the guy who threw this accusation at me.

Today, after mass, I talked to a Family from Jordan. In the last few years, their families were butchered by Muslims. They fled here where they can practice freedom or religion. They were telling me that just recently back home, muslims stormed a Catholic funeral, and killed the number of people who were there praying and mourning their dead. It’s often the case that when these new stories pop up, people are anxious to inform us that this is not Islam. I want to be clear that it’s not Christians who need that information, that’s the people doing it in the name of Islam. Those are the people who need that information. Right now, the world is in desperate need of a Muslim leader to take authority and to begin speaking against the seemingly constant atrocities. I understand it is a decentralized religion, but I wish with all my heart that the peaceful, non-radicals would stand and say enough.

It’s exactly stuff like this that looks terrible in terms of optics for the Vatican, and which fuels trad resentment.
Piotra.

We do not have a position on the controversy of the Summorum Pontificum pilgrimage in Rome this weekend - we aren't informed enough! But Joseph Shaw ( @LMSChairman) was there, on the ground, and knows enough to try to clear up at least some of the confusion in this 🧵:
On the confusion about what the Rome Pilgrimage was and was not expecting, I can make a preliminary clarification (I intend to write at greater length before long): 1/5 @latinmassuk @LMSChairman @OnePeterFive @CatholicHerald @RealAdVaticanum @dianemontagna
