comments from insane people that materialize under your viral posts are some of the best content on this website
to be clear, we should absolutely punish people who threaten the integrity of private markets. they do not have much integrity to spare
empathy isn’t a finite resource, for some of us
Replying to @pointed_max
mankind has so much capacity for empathy and they’re wasting it on depraved criminals
I want to write down more coherent thoughts but I basically feel really bad for Elizabeth Holmes even though I think she did commit crimes
Elizabeth Holmes was not convicted of any crime related to misleading patients. She is only being punished for misleading investors, which is still obviously bad, but not really where the bulk of the damage lies. Sunny Balwani was convicted of the former
gg ez is a Suno-generated song. it's gone viral more than once. the next frontier seems to be reliably generating a hit, which Suno cannot currently do. this might be bottlenecked by the "real world." for example, it seems like musicians involved in controversy command more attention and thus make more profitable music. you can imagine that there are other non-sonic dimensions that determine the commercial success of a song. it's not clear to me if it will ever be profitable to address these non-sonic bottlenecks with AI generated content. can we create a seemingly-real celebrity beef between celebrities who don't actually exist? can we do one that everyone knows is fake that still improves someone's bottom line?
I think AI brain atrophy makes space for other things, which is good. I feel like my mental state while working is slowly becoming more important than the contents of my brain. If it's easy to get information, the bottleneck becomes your mental flexibility and endurance
it's hard to say what's missing from LLM generated writing, and in a sense nothing is missing because the vast majority of people seem not to notice. I want to say it "flattens idea shapes." It expresses ideas that deserve different containers in one container. "It's not beep it's boop" is one example. but there's more than just specific word choices. hard to describe
I think something that a lot of distraught mathematicians are failing to realize is that math, and really all intellectual traditions, live on through their communities, kind of like parasites and hosts. so when the so-called "mathematical community" rejects an idea, they don't rub it out of existence, they just (attempt to) inoculate their community against it. this is more obvious in situations where the information is economically valuable, like in frontier AI research or nuclear weapons research during the cold war
I really do not like it when smart people who are surely capable of writing down their own thoughts expect you to read their AI generated writing
a lot of bio people seem very pessimistic about digital models of the cell. extrapolating from what happened with mathematicians, that probably means its possible if a very well-capitalized and talent-dense start up takes a crack at it
wow it took 2 more tries until it actually got the answer right. this is "GPT-6" on "Medium" reasoning. full chat: chatgpt.com/share/6acbfd6a-8… (this comes towards the end)
Upholding "learning" as a universal good seems off. Learning is about adapting to the environment. Learning for learning's sake is not that
I'm 6"7'. I have a leg length discrepancy, and I'm finally looking into shoe inserts to correct it. but it occurs to me that there is nothing stopping me from adding on a couple extra inches while i'm at it. I could make myself 6"10' for no damn reason
