The level of continued bang up across the entire prison estate is unclear. There is a real risk that @hmpps is now addicted to ‘lockdown’ . Easy way in, long way back. You don’t rehabilitate people through a door. Is @DominicRaab bothered?
HMP/YOI Deerbolt: “it remained the case that the experience was very poor for these young prisoners who were typically spending 23 hours a day locked in cell with little structured activity” : difficult to understand why this was necessary in July justiceinspectorates.gov.uk/…

@prisonbag I discovered your podcast through @TobiasMenzies and wanted to let you know how informative and moving it was. I first learned about restorative justice studying Indigenous Canada and found the concept of restoring harmony very powerful and thought provoking.

Quality interviewees!*
*Actually immense quality of @prisonbag who opened the ears of the British public to the hidden crisis of incarceration with humour and humanity. Bravo!

If you have any interest in criminalisation and the harms of prison, I’d wholeheartedly recommend listening to @prisonbag and prisonbreak which follows - a brilliant, honest and heartfelt account of the damage the prison is doing to society.

Thank you Josie, @prisonbag for a first rate and challenging listen, and sincere best wishes to you and yours for the future.
Dave Merritt is right,"if you never seek to understand, you will never learn." The UK is a punitive society and I have prejudices that contribute to that.

@prisonbag Brilliant, thought provoking final episode of #PrisonBreak. I am totally certain that the utter futility and inhumanity of the current system will only persist and worsen while prison ministers bear their responsibilities so lightly.

John, you have so much to offer the world, and blowing your own trumpet is something you have yet to learn how to do, so I’ll do it for you: John has a law degree, has survived 13 years of prison, fought heroine, injustice and a terrorit and saved countless lives. Employ him!

Honoured to be asked for ‘my’ opinions in such an important arena! CJS is on its knees! Use lived experience at your fingertips! (& I do hate blowing own trumpet) I could HELP so much as could so many other EX- offenders!! 🙏🏻⚖️💪🏻❤️

Hugely important series (and not just because I'm in it). You can't help fix broken people with broken staff in a broken system. In the end it's that simple & that complicated. An often moving, purposeful, riot of dissenting voices beautifully framed by Josie's narration. A gem.

This is a brilliant episode. Thank you Josie and all concerned. It absolutely reflects our experience and thoughts of Prison. Please keep going and tell us how we can help to get this dreadful system changed - it is beyond disgraceful.

This is an incredible series about prisons, crime and society. Truly human, but also rational and evidence based.
Warning - I cried through episode 3!

It was a real pleasure to be interviewed as part of the latest Prison Break episode, which aired on @BBCRadio4 today. Thoughts on crime, the role of prisons and purpose of custodial sentences, and how we improve outcomes for all. @prisonbag

I would urge anyone interested in UK prisons to follow @prisonbag. Latest pod episode highlighted the madness of ploughing ahead with a deeply punitive system despite clear evidence that it results in higher reoffending levels (& costs c. £17bn per yr).

Wish everyone would listen to this. Often it’s only those who actively want reform that take an interest. The others don’t think about it,have already made up their minds,or really don’t care. Prison Break is powerful & should make people think,if only they would listen & hear

Through my work with @LongfordTrust I have to also say I talk to families who haven't seen a loved one for over a year. I know it's complex but...easing of restrictions should apply to ALL, safely & humanely. @prisonbag @paula_harriott @charlie_taylor6 2/2

Committing a crime is not a wilful act of disobedience - it is the acting out of distress and very low self esteem, created by trauma in childhood and lack of opportunity. We need to help people to prevent crime, not punish them for doing it!
