The Dark, by James Herbert. This is the New English Library 5th edition (hardback) from 1988, though the novel was originally released in 1980. I've noted before there are surprisingly few movie adaptations of Herbert novels. An Australian version of The Survivor was released in 1981 with Robert Powell and Jenny Agutter, both fine actors, and 1995 saw versions of Fluke and Haunted hit the big screen, but it's not much.

Apparently a new Alien movie is in the works. This is very surprising news. When was the last time you saw an Alien movie? I don’t think I’ve seen one for almost seven minutes.

Okay, so I pushed myself to finish watching the Carrie series, despite being no fan at all from the outset. Thoughts? It has a few nice things in it but overall I think it’s a great example of how a lot of things simply don’t need to be expanded to 8 hours of run-time.

Since I’ve given the Carrie series a bit of a kicking I should probably speak of the things I liked in it. I did like the sequence where the school counselor is trying to connect with Carrie by trading quotes with her from books. That was a nice touch.

Oh, I forgot all the stuff about the Salem witch trials and the entire history of mental and physical abuse and subjugation of women throughout time. And I just wanted to watch a show about a put-upon girl having a telekinetic shit fit and fucking up a bunch of people. Jesus.

Okay, this isn’t true. I did want to see something a little more expansive. But I’m not sure it needed to be quite so expansive. It’s just fuckin’ Carrie. I’d hate to see what Mike Flanagan would do to Popeye or Foghorn Leghorn.

I did web development for 18 months. That was over ten years ago. Thank fuck I saw the writing on the wall early on and never bothered to do it professionally. Much better to be mentally ill on my own terms than to ever have cast myself into that wretched void.

Now as I recall, PHP is all the invisible crap happening whenever a web page is active. That wasn’t really my thing. I was more of a designer type, not a coding type. All that stuff drove me batty. Now it’s all going to hell? Honestly, I feel vaguely vindicated.

Very good movie; strange and very effective. Paranoid, psychosexually fraught, very specifically 60s
Everyone thirsting over Oliver Reed now that The Devils is in theaters should take time to check out These Are the Damned (1961). Would make a good double with The Brood.

And when I say ‘check out’ I do mean spoil because I can’t be stuffed watching the rest of it. Hopefully that’s the last we’ll see of Carrie for a while because it’s not that interesting a story. Bullied, repressed child goes psychically apeshit. How many versions do we need?

And generally I don’t mind Mike Flanagan. I enjoyed Midnight Mass tremendously, along with a number of his early films. But this one I couldn’t abide at all.

I started watching the Carrie series and the first 15 minutes annoyed me so damn much that I pulled the plug. Based on a few other comments here I decided to check out the plot and, what, they decided to turn it into X-men or something? Idiotic nonsense.

Been acquainting myself with some Alistair Maclean books and it's curious how often things get smuggled in coffins during transport (happened twice so far). Got loads of guns or a nuclear device? Just whack it in a coffin there and bung it on a ship or train. Bob's your uncle!

Life stinks by a thousand upon thousand cuts of stink these days but I rocked up to my local medical clinic for a skin check and was amazed to see that it had returned to bulk billing. Like your pet dog going rabid then, out of the blue, somehow not being rabid again. Yay!

With great relief I see that by accidentally clicking on my ‘For You’ feed I am urgently reminded that, yes, Christina Hendricks still has massive bazongas.
