This week’s newsletter: I wrote about the GOPs strategy of Islamophobia has been aided by Democrats and the press. And I find the lack of pushback not only immoral but shortsighted.
We either all have a place in democracy or we don’t. And the forces seeking to marginalize their place in the American project will likely expand to others

"Trump admin hopes its bombing campaigns and economic sanctions will force major concessions from the Islamic Republic... "
Months of airstrikes and "maximum pressure" on Iran haven't forced a deal, yet the admin is right back to the exact same playbook. Definition of insanity.
FT:
The US is preparing for a protracted conflict with Iran, even as the Trump administration hopes its bombing campaigns and economic sanctions will force major concessions from the Islamic Republic.
Mike Waltz, Donald Trump’s ambassador to the UN, acknowledged that a year from now the US could still be mired in a stalemate with Iran, without a deal on Tehran’s nuclear programme or a return to prewar shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
“I’m not going to put out hypotheticals. One would hope that they’ll come to the table in a meaningful way before that,” Waltz told the FT in an interview.
But “the president and the US Navy can maintain this blockade [on Iranian ports] for the foreseeable future,” he said, and the administration is “tightening” its economic pressure campaign.

This is wild: The Iran war has driven the cost of chartering an oil tanker from the US to China upwards of $79.6 million. This voyage averaged under $8 million before the war.
For comparison's sake, launching a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket into orbit costs $74 million!
"As it stands, leasing the largest class of crude carriers for the 30-day voyage is equivalent to half the cost of building a brand-new vessel." bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
Aside from the shocking substance of this story, what's amazing is how it was unearthed by Cole. The short version: The Russians were able to penetrate Jared Kushner's iPhone and extract screenshots and data. Then, a Russian intel official was captured by Dutch intelligence (!) and flipped. The Dutch believed Kushner may have been acting on behalf of Russia, so pursued him as an intel target and were able to get into his phone.
They did not find any evidence of Russian collusion, instead they watched him moving hundreds of millions of dollars from slush funds created by Saudi Arabia and the UAE, one of them housed in Israel's central bank.
Incredible reporting, and if Democrats have any sense, they will pull on these threads and learn a lot more about this money.
Explosive story many years in the making, now out in Vanity Fair by Matthew Cole (who will be on Breaking Points next week, and publishing soon in @DropSiteNews):
Saudi Arabia and the UAE set up multi-billion slush funds for Jared Kushner to use.
Iran-Contra 2 here (except with Iran-Contra, at least the US got some hostages released. Not clear what we got out of this one.)
