Hot debate happening. @ragley is insisting I shake hands at the Jeep Rogers YMCA at Lake Carolina. While I say he plays Mahjong at the Lourie Center on Pickens St.

Dr. Brian Newsome and the team at Gray Collegiate Academy were recognized by South Carolina Superintendent of Education Ellen Weaver during the SC Report Card release! Congratulations to the GCA faculty and students for earning an “Excellent” overall rating across all grade levels served this year. This milestone builds on an incredible track record of academic consistency, with the high school earning an “Excellent” rating for six consecutive years and the middle school maintaining an “Excellent” rating for four consecutive years!

Congratulations to the Institute schools that demonstrated excellent growth scores on this year’s South Carolina Report Card! Excellent growth proves our schools are accelerating learning, closing gaps, and helping every child #MoveTheNeedle toward a bright future.
Thank you to our school communities for setting the standard across our state!

Earlier today I announced endorsements from eleven South Carolina Sheriffs.
I’m honored by this recognition, but the real credit belongs to the many people who have come together around a shared commitment to keeping students safe.
School safety isn’t a slogan. It’s the daily work of ensuring teachers can teach, students can learn, and first responders have the tools and information they need when every second counts. I’m grateful for the sheriffs, school resource officers, educators, administrators, first responders, and state leaders who have partnered in this effort to make South Carolina’s schools safer for every child and every educator,
Sheriffs Across South Carolina Back Ellen Weaver’s School Safety Agenda
COLUMBIA, S.C. — Sheriffs from every corner of South Carolina are standing with State Superintendent of Education Ellen Weaver, citing her leadership in creating the Safe Schools Office, strengthening emergency preparedness, and advancing a comprehensive approach to protecting students and educators.
From creating the Department’s Safe Schools Office and bringing experienced law enforcement professionals into its ranks to investing in school security and advancing policies that help students focus on learning, Weaver has made school safety a priority backed by action, resources, and results.
“School safety cannot be a talking point or a checklist. It takes real investment, strong partnerships, and people who understand what it takes to protect a school. Superintendent Weaver has made it clear that keeping students and educators safe is a priority, and she has backed that commitment with meaningful action,” said Greenville County Sheriff Hobart Lewis.

Safe Schools Initiatives Led by Ellen Weaver
- Under Superintendent Weaver’s leadership, the State Department of Education has:
- Established the Office of Safe Schools, whose work is dedicated exclusively to improving school safety statewide.
- Leveraged federal funding to conduct physical security assessments and safety audits of school facilities.
- Championed funding for next-generation school mapping technology to help first responders navigate school buildings and improve emergency response during critical incidents.
- Secured $20 million annually in each state budget, $80 million total, through a school safety grant program. Those investments have helped schools strengthen security through:
- Classroom door locks and improved perimeter security
- Bullet-resistant windows and weapons detection systems
- Additional physical security enhancements tailored to school needs
Weaver recognizes that technology is an important part of school safety, but also that it can become a distraction when misused. Protecting students means paying attention to what happens in the classroom as well as at the front door, which is why she has supported both advanced safety tools and phone-free learning environments through the Free to Focus initiative.
What Sheriffs Across South Carolina Are Saying:
“The digital school mapping technology Superintendent Weaver has championed gives our deputies and first responders accurate, real-time information on their devices the moment they arrive. When seconds count, that kind of preparation can make the difference.” – Chesterfield County Sheriff Cambo Streater
“Creating a dedicated Office of Safe Schools and staffing it with people who understand law enforcement operations has strengthened coordination between our offices and local districts. Superintendent Weaver has treated school safety as a shared responsibility, not just an education-department issue.” – Georgetown County Sheriff Carter Weaver
“The physical security assessments and the funding that followed them have given schools concrete ways to harden their buildings while we continue to focus on rapid response. Superintendent Weaver has backed the work with both resources and consistent follow-through.” – Edgefield County Sheriff Jody Rowland
“School safety works best when education leaders and law enforcement stay aligned on preparedness, information-sharing, and practical tools. Superintendent Weaver has made that partnership a priority and delivered results our communities can see.” – Abbeville County Sheriff Ray Watson
“When we had that serious incident at Chester Park last Halloween, the Department of Education under Superintendent Weaver was responsive and supportive from the start, staying in contact, offering resources, and standing with our schools and deputies. That kind of partnership matters when a community is dealing with something like that.” – Chester County Sheriff Max Dorsey

Investing in our children and providing a platform for their voices is what the Charter School Ambassador program is all about. We welcomed our newest Ambassadors to the program, who joined their peers in sharpening their public speaking skills with valuable insight from Commissioner Stephen Gilchrist, SCDE General Counsel Mr. Todd Atwater, and Institute staff members Dr. Missy Brakefield and Ms. Tiffany Palmer. Students also planned service projects and events for the year ahead.
We can’t wait to see these young leaders put their new skills and lessons into action as they advocate for school choice across South Carolina! #MoveTheNeedle

Key to the city 🔑 🏙️
First and foremost, I want to give all the glory and honor to the Lord above. Without Him, none of this would be possible. Every opportunity, every open door, every lesson, and every blessing has helped shape me into the man I am today. And for that, I am forever grateful.
I want to thank my family and my close friends who have been in my corner, supported me, encouraged me, and believed in me throughout this journey. You’ve seen the highs, you’ve seen the lows, and you’ve continued to stand beside me. This moment is special to me, but it means even more because I get to share it with all of you.
To my beautiful wife, @sadejames , thank you for being my partner, my support system, and my biggest cheerleader. Thank you for standing beside me as we continue to build our life, our family, and our legacy together.
And to my two beautiful daughters, Christian and Chloe, Daddy loves you more than words could ever explain. Everything I do, I do with you two in mind. I want you to grow up knowing that with faith, hard work, dedication, and a willingness to serve others, you can accomplish things beyond your wildest dreams. I hope one day you look back on moments like this and understand that your dad wasn't just trying to be successful — he was trying to build something that would last long after him.
To my mother, thank you for everything you've done for me. Thank you for your love, your sacrifices, and the foundation you helped build in my life. There are so many things that people see today, but they don't always see the people who helped make it possible. I will never forget what you've poured into me, and I am forever grateful to call you my mother.
To my aunts, uncles and cousins, thank you for the love, the support, the lessons, and the role you've played in my life. Family is everything, and I understand that the person I am today has been shaped by the people who surrounded me, encouraged me, and helped guide me along the way. I appreciate each and every one of you more than you know.
And I absolutely cannot stand here today without recognizing one of the most important women in my life — my grandmother, Clara.
Grandma Clara, thank you for pouring so much of yourself into me. Thank you for the love, the wisdom, the guidance, and the values you've instilled in me. So much of who I am today is connected to what you poured into my life. The lessons you taught me and the love you gave me have helped shape the man, husband, father, and mentor I continue to strive to be.
Receiving the Key to the City is an incredible honor, and I do not take it lightly. I understand that this recognition represents something bigger than me. It represents my family, my upbringing, my friends, my colleagues, my students, and the community that continues to inspire me.
My hope is that my story encourages somebody else to keep going. To believe in themselves. To trust God's timing. And to understand that where you start in life does not have to limit where you finish. So thank you City of West Columbia this means the world to me.
God bless you all, and thank you from the bottom of my heart! ❤️ 🙏🏾
