A long read on the ‘national emergency’ of violence against women and girls and whether the Premier League could do more. Free to read on this gift link: nytimes.com/athletic/7143844…
Leagues elsewhere in Europe have competition-wide campaigns against it. Charities say football is a space where a huge number of men and boys can be engaged. The government has recognised the value of using football in the fight. So, could the Premier League do more to combat violence against women and girls? 🔗 nytimes.com/athletic/7143844…

Michael Carrick was given the permanent job in large part because he allowed fans and players to dream of Champions League football. That reality is now a nightmare. Yes, there are injuries, but this was a joyless, limp and timid performance that goes beyond any availability. Manchester United were stretched past breaking point off the ball, were left to chase shadows, were careless and lacking quality in possession, and were completely outplayed. A competition that was supposed to be a chance for Manchester United to build their squad and re-establish their reputation in Europe is turning instead into a semi-regular opportunity for further humiliation. 📝 @reallycerys 🔗 nyti.ms/4sfKW3b

I was about to tweet a joke about Manchester United improving on last week by not conceding inside one minute but in the time it took me to write it out they'd conceded inside three

Laurie is right - it takes a lot of time, effort (+skill!) to do these pieces. This is free to read so if you can, read it at source. That's what allows us to keep doing it, and what gives you the full story.

Erik ten Hag knows what it is like to be in the eye of the storm at Manchester United. @LaurieWhitwell spent two evenings with the Dutchman in his hometown of Enschede, in the east of the Netherlands, to peel back the curtain on his two-and-a-half years at Old Trafford. In part one, Ten Hag talks about: ▪️ The broken “promises” that led to his sacking ▪️ Why he had to act on Cristiano Ronaldo, a player who “let the team down” ▪️ His desire to sign Harry Kane and Declan Rice ▪️ The “toxic culture” and the "Madrid connection" that brought player power to the club 🔗 nyti.ms/4z9cp9d

Michael Carrick believes Manchester United enjoyed a “fresh start” at Leeds after a trying week. You could see his point - but some troubling facts remain. United have one win in seven games. They are 13th in the league. And they remain a blunt instrument. 📝 @reallycerys 🔗 nyti.ms/47rTp9U

A maddening equaliser to concede to draw 1-1, for the second Premier League game in a row — but on the whole, that was a definite improvement. #MUFC didn't allow themselves to be bullied. Showed some resilience. Thought all three midfielders did well. Still need to take chances.

Think Tielemans in a more advanced role is a better bet to get more from him. But a big test for Santos x Baleba midfield pair, having only played together once, but with no Mainoo few options. Wonder if we might see Bruno Fernandes as a false 9 at times today.

The most painful thing about Man Utd’s start to the season is that it’s so much worse than what the same coach, and mostly the same squad, did last season. These are the (main) things I think have changed on the pitch. Free to read @TheAthleticFC #MUFC nytimes.com/athletic/7695636…
