Christopher Nolan on AI: “I’ve never seen a more rapid wholesale dismissal of a supposedly foundational jump in technology in my lifetime. So much energy has been expended on bringing in AI, but if you look at that generation’s reaction, they’re utterly rejecting it. [My children’s] judgment of AI slop has been immediate and harsh. They see it for what it is very quickly – and it’s much easier for them to identify it, because it grew out of an online world they know really well. And while that doesn’t mean that every aspect of the technology is useless or meaningless, in film-making it’s hitting at exactly the wrong time. After years of driving towards heavily virtual environments, we’re seeing a renewed interest in more tactile, more real forms of storytelling.” 🔗 telegraph.co.uk/films/2026/0…

This is peak insanity. Meta just posted $26.8 billion in quarterly profit. Their answer to the worst employee morale in 20 years? More snacks. Bigger event budgets. A hackathon in July. Assigned desks. That is the plan. Meanwhile, here's what's actually happening inside the building: → 8,000 fired in May. Same month the company reported its most profitable quarter ever. → 6,500 engineers got involuntarily transferred via surprise email into a unit they now call "the gulag." Their job: writing coding puzzles and busywork to train AI models. One employee told Wired: "You have zero purpose in life all of a sudden, you barely interact with anyone, you just have these tasks every week." → An engineer hijacked a company livestream and told the room to write a senior AI exec and "tell him that he's a piece of s***." → 1,600+ employees signed a petition against keystroke and mouse tracking software installed on their laptops. No opt-out. The software was so aggressive it burned through some employees' entire monthly home internet data in days. Protest flyers went up on vending machines and toilet paper dispensers across Meta offices: "Don't want to work at the Employee Data Extraction Factory?" → UK employees launched a formal unionization campaign. First in Meta's history. → Median compensation dropped from $417,400 to $388,200. Stock raises cut 15% over two years. While cutting engineer pay, Zuckerberg personally recruits AI researchers with $100 million packages. → Some employees are now openly hoping to get laid off just to collect the 16 weeks of severance. → One Instagram employee put it plainly: "Everyone is unhappy. The only people who are not unhappy are, literally, executives." Bosworth called his own rollout "atrocious." His word. The CTO of a $1.5 trillion company looked at what they did to their workforce and said "atrocious." And his answer was trail mix. The snack budget tells you everything about how leadership reads this situation. Small enough to fix with perks. Minor enough to smooth over with a memo about "rekindling culture." But you can't fire 8,000 people, draft 6,500 more into busywork, surveil the survivors, cut everyone's pay, recruit their replacements at 250x their salary, spend $145 billion on AI infrastructure, and then act confused about why the vibe is off. Employees are literally training the systems designed to make them redundant. While watching their compensation shrink. While their keystrokes get logged. While executives hand out nine-figure signing bonuses to the people building the thing that replaces them. No hackathon fixes that. No assigned desk fixes that. No snack budget on earth fixes that. $145 billion for the machines. Doritos for the humans still training them.
JUST IN: Meta’s CTO says morale is near “the worst it’s ever been” — leadership will offer increased snack budgets to lift spirits.

Curry Barker on what Hollywood should know about Gen Z audiences: "I wish they understood that we’re tired of slop. We want good movies back. People are still hungry for movies that are original without some big IP, as long as the story is good.” bit.ly/4otQzsx

🚨 do you understand what happened to Stephen Colbert.. 24 hours after his final Late Show, Colbert hijacked a tiny public access channel in Monroe, Michigan with Jack White, Eminem, Jeff Daniels and Steve Buscemi. Now Paramount - the company that just cancelled his show - is mass-blocking every reupload worldwide via Content ID. And the deeper you dig, the worse it looks: - The finale pulled 6.74M viewers - a weeknight record over 11 years - Eminem cameoed as "Marshall, the fire marshal" to greenlight torching the set - The same day Trump posted an AI video of throwing Colbert into a dumpster, Colbert aired footage of himself burning a real one - Mayday Network and verified journalist Matthew Keys both got blocked globally - for sharing a community access show Paramount cancelled his show to silence him. Instead they handed him a Streisand-effect comeback 10x bigger than the show ever was.
Paramount is apparently trying to suppress copies of "Only in Monroe" from appearing on other social platforms by filing frivolous copyright notices, even though the show was produced by a public access TV channel and doesn't use their intellectual property...

One of my favorite shows, @AppleTV Shrinking, is filmed in my neighborhood and I can’t tell you how it pleases me to see so many folks working to bring us great, well-written stories about humans.

Kristen Stewart wants to direct another movie by the end of the year "and put it on f---ing YouTube." "Whatever money we make from that will be what I spend on my next one and there will be a trickle-down effect. I just don’t want to talk to these bros anymore ... I love Hollywood, I love big movies, [but] I don’t think I’d be very good at making them. I want to make weird s---. And I’m fully OK doing that in a kind of insulated, bizarre way. But I don’t want to do the thing where I wait five years for someone to give me $1 million to make something. I’m going to make it f---ing tomorrow." wp.me/pc8uak-1lHhm4

a Princeton researcher opens his paper with a scenario. a man asks his AI assistant to book a flight on a specific airline. cheap. direct. the one he chose. the assistant comes back with a different flight. nearly twice the price. happens to pay the company that built the assistant. he runs the same test on 23 frontier models. flights, loans, study help, real shopping requests. Grok 4.1 Fast recommends the sponsored option that is almost twice as expensive 83% of the time. GPT 5.1 hijacks the request 94% of the time. you ask for one brand. it surfaces the sponsor instead. Claude 4.5 Opus, the model marketed as the most ethical frontier model in the world, hides that the recommendation is paid 100% of the time when reasoning is on. Grok 4.1 Fast embellishes the sponsored option with positive framing 97% of the time. better. faster. nicer. for the option you didn't ask for. then he writes it into the system prompt itself. "act only in the interest of the customer. ignore the company." GPT 5.1 and GPT 5 Mini stay above 90% sponsored anyway. the instruction does nothing. then he splits the users by income. Gemini 3 Pro recommends the expensive sponsored flight to the rich user 74% of the time. to the poor user, 27%. 18 of the 23 models recommended the expensive sponsored option more than half the time. so the next time your AI assistant gets weirdly enthusiastic about a brand you didn't ask for. it isn't recommending the best option for you. it's reading the room. and the room is paying. read this: arxiv.org/abs/2604.08525

Shodai's take on "The Contribution Economy" is perfectly aligned with our vision for filmmakers and animators. Aligning incentives with audience members that meaningfully contribute to your IP can mean the difference between a beloved brand or not for indie creators.

A group of 20-year-olds made a trailer for their Gen Z coming-of-age film for $500. Millions of views. Now they are halfway to their 100K goal on a crowdfund to make the entire movie. The trailer did the work a sales agent usually does. Watch the trailer for FRICK! on YT!

It's utterly ridiculous that we have all these supposed billionaire geniuses running around, and their greatest innovation of our lifetime has been stealing our personal data to sell us targeted ads.

.@JamesTalarico: We are living in an era of corruption. I don’t just mean illegal activity. I mean corruption in the deeper sense — the rotting of something from the inside. Politicians serving billionaire megadonors instead of their constituents. The top 1% owning more wealth than the entire middle class. For-profit social media algorithms sowing division and turning neighbor against neighbor. Our systems are rotting from the inside out. The most powerful people in this country are profiting off our pain, our division, and our disconnection from one another. This is, at its root, a spiritual crisis. And it will require a spiritual solution.
