This divestment win was organized by local chapters of DSA, JVP, and more. We can do this around the country!

The bosses have two parties. Workers need our own! There are barely FOUR DAYS left till the polls close on Nov. 3rd. Help us canvass during the critical get-out-the-vote period!
Brittany is running as an independent socialist to fight for a $30 minimum wage, a statewide rent freeze, publicly owned housing, and healthcare for all Rhode Islanders free at the point of service. Visit brittanyforri.com/events to get involved!

This is the whole problem with the “party surrogate in form, clean break in content” idea. Yes, theoretically you could run on the Dem Ballot line but not actually “be a Democrat” and fight for a socialist program when elected. But you have just campaigned as a Democrat and gotten elected by a constituency who voted for you as a Democrat.
You’re still structurally dependent on another party because you’re dependent on that voter base, even if the mechanisms at play aren’t legal and can technically be ignored.

That would be basic sense in any other country, but our electeds won’t be able to get committee assignments if they don’t caucus with Dems, and the vast majority of their voters are partisan Dems who expect them to actually do legislative work
New in DemLeft: The @brittanyforri campaign is a unique effort in DSA to build power outside the Democratic Party. Read about why RI DSA is going independent, and help us GOTV!

The story is that the federal program to preserve public housing moves it into Section 8 and often places it under management of corporate landlords, with bad oversight and outcomes for tenants. Maybe you think that's worth the risk, but it’s not clearly "public housing."

Is this DEK meant to deliberately misstate what's going on or did the person who wrote it not understand the story?

Some NYCHA tenants hoped Mamdani would step in the way of what they see as a land grab. But the admin has supported the Fulton and Elliott-Chelsea plan and many more conversions across the system. Tenants are now battling not only NYCHA and partners but their socialist mayor.

WSJ reports that in 2024, AOC was grilled by Dem Steering & Policy Committee and scolded by conservative Dem Henry Cuellar for backing primary challenges to incumbent Dems. Since then, she hasn't backed any challenges to Dem incumbents. wsj.com/politics/elections/o…
R.I sold off Prospect Heights, a public housing complex and turned them into sec 8 apts. The kicker though is that those apts become market rate after a certain # of years or when the poor tenant moves out. Thats the whole point of doing these deals.
Join us tomorrow for a town hall with @brittanyforri , RI DSA member and independent socialist candidate for the State House. Let’s talk about what workers in this state can do to fight back against the owning class and take power into our own hands!

It does say something relevant about American democracy that New York voters twice went to the polls last year to overwhelmingly vote for a *socialist* who vocally opposes US support for Israel, and he won overwhelmingly, and yet...
The NYPD somehow remained in the hands of an heiress to a billionaire real estate fortune that has long dominated NYC politics and who have been fanatically devoted to Israel. Just one of those "quirks" of American democracy:
We warned you about NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
When Mamdani announced he was keeping her as NYPD Commissioner, we organized over 100 organizations to oppose her appointment and laid out her record of racist policing, mass surveillance, repression of protesters, and collaboration with Israeli occupation forces.
These demands came from the streets, from the communities that have been subjected to this violence for years. The movement was right to oppose Tisch then, and we’re right to demand her resignation now.
We are recirculating our statement and calling on every organization that has not yet signed to add its name.
TISCH OUT. DISBAND THE SRG. ABOLISH ICE.

DAC is absolutely right to call for the disbandment of the NYPD’s Strategic Response Group and the resignation of Jessica Tisch. These are demands that organizers in the streets have been making for years, and it’s long past time they became nonnegotiable.
The NYPD cannot claim to protect New Yorkers while acting as the enforcement arm of ICE, brutalizing protesters, and shielding federal agents from accountability.
Any elected official who claims to represent a progressive agenda should be publicly demanding, at minimum, the abolition of ICE, the disbandment of the SRG, and Tisch’s immediate resignation.
This is the absolute floor. We don’t need more statements of concern or performative outrage from politicians who refuse to confront the institutions carrying out this violence. We need them to take a side, publicly and unequivocally.
Yesterday, an ICE agent opened fire in Marble Hill. They shot a member of our community in the neck while he was in his car. His five-year-old kid was in a child seat in the back of the car when ICE agents fired at least 7 rounds into it. This was in the middle of the afternoon, with children walking home from school and people heading home from work. Federal agents put every one of them in danger.
When I was in Marble Hill last night I saw NYPD officers rapidly escalating violence. As I was trying to de-escalate, I was shoved to the ground by an officer. I witnessed unmarked law enforcement cars hitting protestors as NYPD officers pushed people out of its path. And instead of condemning ICE’s violence, Police Commissioner Tisch attempted to justify the shooting by reading off our neighbor’s past interactions with police.
The NYPD spent more time protecting a militia that just shot someone than protecting New Yorkers. Last night, the NYPD and Commissioner Tisch violated the spirit, if not the letter, of our sanctuary city policies and fueled the Trump Administration’s attempt to demonize our communities. The NYPD’s Strategic Response Group must be disbanded as quickly as possible, and Commissioner Tisch must step down.
In this district, there are mothers who are afraid to send their kids to school, workers who are afraid to show up for their shifts, and people who won’t call for help anymore because they can’t be sure who will come. That’s what it means to have a violent militia operating in your community. You don’t feel safe walking down your own street.
For decades, we’ve been told ICE can be fixed with more oversight, better training, or reform. But you can’t reform an agency whose purpose is to terrorize immigrant families. You can’t train cruelty out of a system built to enact cruelty. ICE must be abolished.
This moment demands that everyone step up. Elected officials at every level need to stop hedging and say it plainly: Abolish ICE now. Our city must enforce every sanctuary protection we have and city officials must ensure this cannot happen again.

It’s funny to me that the Savvy Politics Understand line right now is “do not, under any circumstances, apply political pressure on the one guy it might work on”
