Waltz was addressing the General Assembly and exposing the regime’s corrupt and luxurious lifestyle, which he says is to blame for taking the Cuban people's wealth, not the U.S. embargo. He showed images of the communist Castro family wearing $40,000 watches (an amount that equals 55 years of an average Cuban's salary), of their personal Islands complete with mansions, their million-dollar yachts, and the $18 billion they have stashed in overseas accounts. “The secret financial records from the Cuban regime’s own military conglomerate called GAESA revealed billions in profits, billions in assets abroad, billions in cash—$18 billion in fact, $14 billion in cash to be exact." "And for context, that’s enough money to pay every single Cuban’s salary for two years straight, or to stock every single Cuban pharmacy for over 40 years.” The Cuban communist regime lives an elitist lifestyle while ordinary Cubans face blackouts and poverty. Members of the Cuban communist delegation, including Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, started banging on their table, shouting for him to stop and calling Waltz a “liar.” Rodríguez then left his seat and walked toward the podium. Waltz refused to back down: “This individual needs to back away from this podium. He’s not going to intimidate me in the United States of America like he tries to intimidate political prisoners. I’m the representative of the United States of America. Back up. This isn’t Havana.” The General Assembly president briefly suspended proceedings and ordered the Cuban communists to return to their seats. Meanwhile, Richard Tur de la Concepción (first secretary of Cuba’s UN mission) walked up to Waltz’s spokesperson, J.P. Freire, while Freire was filming the confrontation. He pushed Freire and tried to grab his phone and knock it out of his hand while claiming Freire was violating his rights. Waltz posted video of the incident and said that the same communist official had also tried to pressure UN staff into cutting the U.S. microphones.
