In medieval England, an outlaw could be declared caput lupinum — “wolf’s head.” That meant he had been placed outside the protection of the law and could, in some circumstances, be killed with impunity. The court did not merely condemn the man. It first turned him into something legally huntable. #Edvane #Wolfshead

#vss365 England’s last wolves gathered beneath the oak where the hunters had hanged their cubs. Their oldest had discovered how to take human shape and urged the others to follow him into the village. “We could live among them,” he said. “Eat at their tables. Sleep beside their fires.” “And when the full moon makes each of us a #wolf again?” asked his mate. “By then we shall know which doors are left unlatched.” #Edvane #DarkFantasy

🌍 Indonesia holds 34% of the world’s peat reserves, one of the planet’s most critical carbon sinks. When these peatlands are drained and burned for palm oil, centuries of stored carbon are released in a flash. This year’s fires have already emitted an estimated 180 million tons of carbon, the highest in 24 years. #CarbonEmissions #Peatlands

This is a Javan slit-faced bat, facing extinction because consumers, especially in the US, buy them for Halloween taxidermy decorations. Apparently, people like their "rabbit-like" ears. The Center for Biological Diversity filed a petition on October 29 asking the US Fish and Wildlife Service to list them under the Endangered Species Act. They say listing the Javan slit-faced bat would meaningfully contribute to the species’ conservation by strictly regulating the import, export, and interstate commerce of the species, and hope the listing will also raise awareness of the species and its threats within the United States. Let's start spreading awareness right now of the madness of driving a species to extinction for a frivolous decoration. The full petition is in this thread. (1/2)
