the weird effect of people switching jobs more often is that industry secrets are extinct when you spend 30 years at a company, trade secrets/information could be a durable and lasting edge but when people change jobs every four years ... it's all public

My God. Maintaining this road amid climate change is like 1/10th the cost of CA high speed rail.

A wise person once said that you will experience climate change through a series of increasingly wild videos, until you are the one taking the video.

Met a guy who switched out of CS into corporate law. He said “you guys are lucky, you can just run your code to make sure it works. Nobody finds compile time exceptions in my contracts until they make it into a courtroom, and even then the judge is often older than gcc”

Biden’s USDA is pulling off a once unimaginable feat: gaining ag community support for fighting climate change. "The winning formula involves paying farmers to test out green practices, rather than forcing them to pay for excessive carbon emissions." politico.com/news/2023/08/07…

Broke this late on Friday so I’m reupping now. The US government is planning to buy carbon removal, creating an Operation Warp Speed-like program for a key climate technology. The Energy Department program will have a budget in the tens of millions. heatmap.news/economy/carbon-…

If you feel like you did everything you were supposed do, but work keeps getting harder and harder, it's probably because you're in a bad supply & demand situation in your specific market. Some thoughts on why this happens to lawyers:

I can feel the unprotected bike lanes when I ride. "The @CambMA Police annual report from 2021, looking at a different data measure: “In 2021, there were 1,172 crashes reported … down 21% when compared to the 10-year average of 1,479 crash reports.” cambridgeday.com/2023/05/22/…

Former GC of the Copyright Office (& perhaps the most knowledgeable copyright practitioner on earth), Jon Baumgarten, just released a letter to the House Judiciary Committee rebutting suggestions that training AI was protected by fair use. The analogy to photocopying is the 🧑🏽‍🍳💋

These days we pretty much only allow people to immigrate from China, India, Korea, etc. who are exceptionally intelligent, highly educated, and successful. The only way for their children to not dominate education admissions is for there to be steep discrimination against them.

You don't need some racial superiority theory to explain this. It's a selection effect. You should not expect admission of Asian students to match the general population. They're smarter than average *because we only let the smart ones in.*

‘What this adds up to is that Tokyo is one of very few cities on Earth where travel by car is not actively subsidized, and funnily neither is public transport, and yet both work well, when appropriate.’
