They taught us that God is white, the saints are white and the devil is black. Most of our people accepted it without question and demonized our traditional customs, just as the imported religions intended.
The holy places remained in Europe and the Middle East: Rome, Mecca, Medina, Jerusalem. We were told these were the only centers of the sacred, while our own shrines and ancestors were rejected.
Why do we still accept religions that teach us we are not worthy of being saints and angels the way the holy books and images depict them?
This song angered the Catholic Church in Congo, and most of us who don't speak Lingala never knew what it said until it was subtitled in English.
It's called Nakomitunaka, Lingala for "I ask myself." Verckys Kiamuangana released it in 1972, in what was then Zaire. President Mobutu was running his authenticity campaign, a push to replace colonial names and influences with African ones, and he was in open conflict with the Church.
The song asks why all the saints and angels are white, while a black person is called a devil.
Pepe Kalle sang lead on the original. Verckys didn't write a sermon. He wrote a question.
His daughter Ancy has now recorded it with the lyrics and music unchanged.
Verckys later made peace with the
Church. The question is still unanswered.

Apparently my tendency to give people I really like small gifts is actually a common neurodivergent thing called pebbling. Like a penguin.

My Kisumu brothers never disappoint. There was a cycling event and the locals are in unison that the quality of race bikes was wanting.
