It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of George Motschall, former Southern California Association of Foresters and Fire Wardens Director from the San Bernardino NF. George passed away in his sleep, after having several stents put in over the past few months.
After breakfast, we reviewed the 2023 Fire Season Outlook, followed by a presentation on the Wildland Fire Threat Integration Center from CAL FIRE Assist. Chief Tim Chavez, then Mike DeLeo, CAL FIRE BC BDU, presented Healing through Service, "A journey through addiction & trauma"
The day's last presentation was a powerfully moving story of the ORC Handcrew Santiago Fire Burnover by Doug and Dylan Van Iwaarden, Orange County Fire Authority.
After lunch, Fire Captain OCFA (retired) Jeff Hughes gave a sobering talk about the Science of Exposure for wildland firefighters and Cancer. AG Pass/Large Animal Removal with Anthony Stornetta, Deputy Chief Santa Barbara Co. Fire Dept. and Extended Attack Index, Joaquin Ramirez
This morning Chief John Hawkins gave an inspirational speech about why being a firefighter is such a great job. Followed by Battery Safety with Rob Rezende, Battalion Chief, San Diego City Fire Department.
The 91st conference commenced with the Los Angeles County Department Honor Gard Presentation of Colors. Kicking us off, our Master of Ceremonies, LACo. Dept. Deputy Chief John Tripp (retired).
