Discovery often comes from putting familiar pieces in unexpected ways: but bio space is too vast to do that effectively? 🤖 1000s of AI agents helped connect our whole-brain Perturb-seq atlas w literature. w @OpenAI @joyjiao12: more coming! See preprint biorxiv.org/content/10.64898…
GPT-Rosalind surfaced a new lead for drug discovery: could restoring cholesterol transport protect neurons from degeneration? DCTN1 is a gene linked to Perry syndrome, a rare neurodegenerative disorder. In mouse-brain data, disrupting it increased expression of genes involved in making cholesterol. GPT-Rosalind suggested a possible explanation: cholesterol may not be reaching where neurons need it. That gives scientists a specific mechanism to test and, if confirmed, a direction for developing new treatments for neurodegenerative disorders. With @perturbai_tx and @scrippsresearch, a team of thousands of GPT-Rosalind agents worked in parallel, connecting gene-expression results from millions of mouse brain cells with scientific literature in just 32 minutes. We’re now expanding this collaboration to identify new drug targets. openai.com/index/scaling-ai-…

8 million brain cells. 32 minutes. A new frontier in medicine. In less than a year, PerturbAI built a proprietary AI-native drug discovery engine, created 6 genomic maps, revealing how genes influence health and disease in living systems. Now, together with @OpenAI and @ScrippsResearch, we've uncovered 11,000 biological insights and ~100 promising leads using frontier AI in just 32 minutes. We're expanding our partnership into drug-target discovery, bringing us closer to understanding disease and developing new medicines. Better biology. Better targets. Better medicines. Congratulations to Scripps Research science writer Melissa Suran, whose story “Life beyond Crohn’s disease” received an honorable mention in the short-form category of the 2026 National Association of Science Writers Excellence in Institutional Writing Awards! The national awards recognize high-caliber, publicly accessible science writing produced on behalf of an institution. Published in Scripps Research Magazine, Suran’s story follows Gary Jacobson’s decades-long experience with Crohn’s disease and the pioneering treatment he received from Scripps Research physician-scientist Amy L. Lightner MD, MBA. 📲 See the full list of 2026 honorees: ow.ly/xMZ250ZXopx 📄 Read the recognized story: ow.ly/JTqk50ZXopz

At Scripps Research, Assistant Professor Christian Diercks (@DiercksLab) is turning bacterial growth into a continuous protein-evolution experiment. His lab’s T7-ORACLE platform adds an independent DNA-copying system to E. coli. As the bacteria divide, T7-ORACLE continually mutates a separate circle of DNA carrying a selected gene, generating protein variants without increasing the mutation rate of the bacterial genome. This replaces repeated rounds of manual DNA manipulation with continuous variation and selection inside growing cells. Diercks’ lab is using T7-ORACLE to pursue therapeutic enzymes, highly specific binding proteins and new technologies for genetic-code expansion. Research directions include reprogramming the protein-cutting enzyme from botulinum toxin—the substance used in Botox—to recognize disease-related targets in pain, as well as developing non-addictive alternatives to opioid-based pain treatments.
