I’m not personally clear e.g. on why the USCCB felt the need to file an amicus brief in a gun control case, but you won’t be surprised to hear it involves human dignity.

re: human dignity as the commerce clause of the church, every political question becomes a moral question when you claim it involves human dignity, thus placing it under the special competence of bishops and removing it from the domain of the laity.

What exactly is the remedy supposed to be for people who violated US immigration law, ignored a court’s final order of removal, and possibly made fraudulent statements when claiming asylum?

Someone who is not a citizen is in the country with a removal order, and they are working and raising a family and haven't committed any crimes unrelated to their immigration status. What should we do? Nothing. We should do nothing. jessesingal.substack.com/p/y…

Jack Bogle taught me this was the ideal portfolio construction.
72% of Anthropic's revenue is from US customers. That's a lot.

+Eckman has wisely discerned not to go full +Cupich and show Catholics how he believes you should engage with politics. Platitudes all the way down.
Bishop Eckman of Pittsburgh: “For us as Catholics, the voting booth is not a place where we set our faith aside. The Gospel asks us to love God and to love our neighbor, and how we vote is one of the ways we carry that love into public life. So, I ask you not to vote out of habit, party loyalty, or self-interest alone. Ask instead which candidate will serve the good of everyone, especially those who have the least voice.”

We are this close to someone saying it violates human dignity to invite a person to believe in the Gospel.

We are this close to someone saying it violates human dignity to invite a person to believe in Christ.
LATEST: Cardinal Vesco says the Catholic Church is “not there to convert” The Archbishop of Algiers said: “We are the Church of this people. Not a proselytising Church, not a Church that is there to convert, but a Church that aspires to be one of the components of this people.” He called proselytism “poison” because it treats another person’s religion as false, and argued Christians should choose fraternity over seeing themselves as a “besieged fortress.” Read the full report at @RealAdVaticanum advaticanum.com/article/card…

USCCB MRS staffers see this and think the underlying problem is that long term residency isn’t handed out to all and sundry at the border.
Ya'll, this is nuts. Hundreds - that's right, HUNDREDS - of armed robberies between 2022 and 2024 weren't real. They were staged by the "victims" as part of a massive immigration fraud scheme to secure U-visas for themselves and their families. cwbchicago.com/2026/10/buckt…

Isn’t this the fruit of the Regensburg policy? Don’t say anything that will give Muslims an opportunity to riot and kill their Christian neighbors?

At most a committee might, but even then, I imagine it’s not typical that non-lawyers review their GC’s work. I am curious whether there’s committee input on what gets an amicus brief.

Whatever the neo-Bernadin framework a faction of bishops hope to bring back, it’s not going to happen. The bishops’ collective moral credibility was shot in 2002, and double-tapped in 2018. Progressive policies dressed in human dignity drag are unwanted, and now are not credible.

Rereading Girard’s I See Satan & am always stopped short at chapter on Modern Concern for Victims: “Victims most interesting to us are always those who allow us to condemn our neighbors.” I’ve never felt more seen.

before the “prophetic voice” of the USCCB decided to go all in on defending immigration fraud and labor arbitrage, it was most notable for hiding its rapists from legal consequences. I don’t believe we’re suddenly in danger of the bishops losing their way.
