Like all conventional writing advice this is only helpful for low-level students and bad if codified as a rule. There are plenty of good reasons you might prefer to use the longer, fancier word in a given context: for rhythm, register, phonetic texture, etc.

The Chronic—what genre?—cles of Narnia
the chronicles of narnia don't get enough credit for being so different from each other. No two of them are written in the same genre. LWW: "conventional" hero's journey fantasy Prince Caspian: uncategorizable, no idea what he was going for here tbh Voyage of the Dawn Treader: CS Lewis' The Odyssey The Silver Chair: CS Lewis' Pilgrim's Progress Horse and His Boy: CS Lewis' Arabian Nights Magician's Nephew: multiverse scifi! The Last Battle: apocalypse fantasy very impressive, imo, to do this while returning you to a world and storytelling style that feels familiar from book to book
