I stopped by my favorite local bookstore today. Both Burrowing Owl locations reward a half hour’s browsing. They also carry Call Out Coyote and tell me it’s selling well. You may be able to ask your local bookstore to carry it. Just tell them about @WisebloodBooks.

Btw, Borger is probably the least Camelot-like town in the panhandle. It was a Boom/Bust, tent-town, oil wildcat, br*thels vs Baptists, sheriffs in the organized crime rings at least until WW2. A prolonged Wild West adolescence.
The homies went a-questing in ye olde Borgertown. Galahad called Bedivere across the table round, “Out beyond Camelot’s peaceable confines Lies a subdevelopment with our names on signs!”

Never get so close to the party line that you can’t leave the party in five minutes flat when you spot that the party line is more interested in self preservation than a solution.

Lord willing, and I mean that, I’ll be reading with my friends Jack Baumgartner and @je_suis_liv at the venerable 8th Day Books in Wichita next month. It will be good to see my friends. It would be nice to see some of y’all there too if you’re in those woods. Nov 12th.

Turning and turning in the cylindrical gyre The falcon can hear the falconer just fine; Things are managed; the centre holds; Mere bureaucracy is loosed upon the world.

01. Start with shorter books and build up your reading stamina. Possibly your ability to focus has been sapped by other media. Luckily, this is a problem with a simple solution. The more you read, the easier reading will become. 02. Carry a book with you. I find it very unsettling when I visit airports and everyone—babies, kids, parents—is glued to a screen. We spend a good chunk of our lives in DMV lines and sitting in diners. You can get a shocking amount of reading done in those spare moments. 03. Read before falling asleep. This is actually where I get most of my reading done. Resolve that for the next hour or however long, you’re not going to look at your phone. There’s something almost hypnotically soothing about reading in silence at the end of a day. 04. Reduce the level of non-book entertainments. This is the main reason most people struggle with reading, because we live in a world of infinite diversions. Harold Bloom said, “There are enormous obstacles to deep reading now. The tyranny of the visual is a frightening thing.” But once you realize those diversions are the very things keeping you from reading, it becomes easier to prioritize reading as a hobby. Books are both good for the brain (in the same way exercise is good for the body) and more emotionally rewarding than much of what we consume. 05. Keep a reading diary. It can be something as simple as jotting down the titles of every book you complete. Seeing those titles begin to add up is enormous fun, and will motivate you to want to keep reading. 06. Remember that reading is supposed to be fun. There’s a reason books were the chief entertainment for American pioneers and British coal-miners of the nineteenth century. We once had a massively literate working-class, and I believe we could revive a culture of reading for pleasure.
People who read books for fun in the big 26, genuinely how do you do it. I salute you your brain is made of sterner stuff than mine

Everybody wants to text or get coffee. It would be great if there was a technology where we could communicate with the nuance of conversation, but also have this conversation from my office or vehicle instead of wiping 1.5 hours from the calendar to drive across town.

I was stationed at the top of Amarillo last night, writing poems on demand for a local childhood literacy fundraiser. I wrote 12 poems in 3 hrs. Topics included: dachshunds, BFFs, middle age romance, hot firemen, corky-poos, fast cars, city life. All poems rhymed. Few were good.

Topics were chosen by the patron. All in all, it was a fun exercise for a good cause. The hardest part was interacting with party people while trying to write. The time crunch forced me to draft on the typewriter, so no backspace & no erasing.

Watched Heart of the Beast with the family last night. Pretty good, but two observations: 1. Brad Pitt is old enough for the premise to be Brad Pitt has a heart attack & crashes a plane. 2. I'm old enough to remember Brad Pitt fighting real bears in movies, not digital ones.

If I had to do it all again I woulda been a middle man. The money’s not in the making, Nor in the customer’s taking, But rather in the hidden theft When money passes from right hand to left.

Don't forget this blurb from Dylan Thomas' "A Child's Christmas in Wales." Maybe we should try it?
