At SRUK/CERU, we are deeply saddened by the passing of Dr Marta Shahbazi Alonso, an exceptional scientist, a dear colleague, friend and collaborator, and a much-valued member of our international scientific community.
Marta was a role model for many of us. She stood out for her research in developmental biology and for her commitment to strengthening the balance between professional career and family life, giving visibility to the figure of the "scientist mother". In recognition of her work and contributions to the community, this year she had been named SRUK/CERU's XI Emerging Talent.
Her talent, dedication and invaluable contributions to science have left a lasting legacy, not only in the scientific world but also in the lives of those fortunate enough to have known and worked alongside her. We will always remember her with deep admiration, respect and affection.
At this incredibly difficult time, we extend our heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathies to her family, friends, colleagues, collaborators and the wider scientific community mourning her loss.
To anyone who may need support, companionship or simply someone to talk to, please know that our community is here for you. SRUK/CERU's doors and communication channels remain open to anyone who wishes to reach out.

Spectacular Nature piece on why AI is not conscious and probably will never be.
Three arguments:
1) Intelligence is not consciousness.
Intelligence is about solving problems. Consciousness is about having subjective experiences.
AlphaFold can solve super difficult problems. By contrast, our brains performs complex operations entirely outside awareness.
Problem-solving and consciousness are two separate things.
2. Biology is essential.
Our brains are alive, down to every cell. Their activity is inseparable from the living tissue that produces it.
The idea that consciousness can be reproduced simply by running the right computations on silicon components who do not fight for their life is a very far fetching and, I would add, almost religious, assumption.
3) The physical organization may matter more than the computation.
According to integrated information theory, consciousness requires specific causal relationships between a system’s physical components.
The computer architectures running today’s AI lack this organization.
The comparison with AlphaFold is particularly revealing:
Almost nobody things AlphaFold is conscious, despite its inner working is very similar to an LLM
Why?
Because it does not speak.
LLMs do speak like us and therefore we fall into an illusion:
Since they speak like us, they must be like us.
But this inference is wrong.
LLMs are just a series of matrix multiplications.
They are not conscious, and they will never be.

After learning of his Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine early Monday morning, Karl Deisseroth spent hours answering calls, giving interviews and being photographed by journalists. His young children were asleep upstairs and had yet to discover that their father's life and work had just drastically changed with one phone call from Sweden.
But life continues – he took a break at 6:30 in the morning to make lunch for his kids as they would be waking up soon and leaving for school.

I gave the fly brain $100 to trade bitcoin.
Dopamine neurons are stimulated when the fly makes profit. Neuron activity controls buy/sell decisions and makes trades on coinbase.
Will the fly get rich?

I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below.

The best employee experience? Probably not humans competing with machines.
Better to design work so each does what it does best: let AI handle speed and repetition, while people keep judgment and responsibility in the decisions shaping the final outcomes.
Microblog @antgrasso
Think of a claims team.
AI can sort incoming cases and summarize the documents. Good. Let it do that.
The specialist can spend more time on the cases where context changes the interpretation or an exception deserves attention.
But if the old workflow stays the same, something goes wrong. People may end up reviewing the AI output and still completing all the steps they were doing before.
Faster technology. More work for the employee.
Not exactly progress.
Work design has to decide where machine speed removes effort and where human judgment stays in charge. People should also know when they need to intervene and what they remain responsible for.
AI should take friction out of work, not give people another layer to manage.
A better employee experience is not less human work. It is less pointless work.

Receiving the 2026 Stockholm Water Prize is an extraordinary honour, but no journey like this belongs to one person.
My deepest gratitude to the Stockholm Water Foundation, the Stockholm Water Prize Jury, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the City of Stockholm, and Sweden for this incredible recognition and an unforgettable celebration.
This prize also belongs to the many people who have shaped my journey and made my work possible: my students and post-docs, my teachers and mentors, and my collaborators and colleagues across the world—in academia, the United Nations, governments, civil society, and beyond. I have learned from you, worked alongside you, and been inspired by you.
I am deeply grateful to those who nominated me for this honour and believed that my work was worthy of it. And I am reminded once again how incredibly lucky I am to have so many wonderful friends in so many corners of the world. Your messages, presence, encouragement, and love have meant more than I can say.
To my parents, my family, and my friends who have stood by me throughout this journey: thank you.
And above all, to my mom. Without her, I would have been nobody in this world. She made sacrifice after sacrifice so that I could learn, grow, dream, and succeed. Whatever I have achieved carries her love, strength, and sacrifices within it. ❤️
To Canada, my new home: thank you for welcoming me and for the extraordinary support you have given our work at UNU-INWEH, enabling us to continue working on some of the most pressing water challenges facing our world.
And finally, to my bigger family: the people of Iran.
Your love and support have followed me throughout my journey. Even when I have been far from home, you have never allowed me to feel that I was walking alone. I carry you, our struggles, our hopes, and our beautiful country with me wherever I go.
This may be a prize with one name on it, but there are countless names, faces, sacrifices, friendships, and acts of kindness behind it.
From the bottom of my heart: thank you.
Tack, Stockholm. Tack, Sverige. ❤️🇸🇪💧

🧠 AI May Change How We Think — But How We Use It Matters
A reported MIT study explored how ChatGPT use affects memory and brain engagement. The findings suggest that relying too heavily on AI may reduce the mental effort we use for writing and learning.
The message isn’t to avoid AI—it’s to use it wisely. Let AI support your thinking, not replace it. The strongest results may come from people who combine their own ideas with AI assistance.
The future belongs to those who use AI as a tool, while keeping their own minds active.
