In 1999 you had to earn over 4x the minimum wage to be considered a higher earner on the 40% rate.
Today just 1.8x the minimum wage considered high earner!
If the same minimum-wage-to-high-earner ratio was applied from 1999 you’d have to earn over £115k before hitting the 40% income tax rate.
We’re seeing a level of wage compression that would make a Soviet era socialist blush.

See this Labour Govt have sneaked in a little 4% increase in the tax you’ll pay on your interest above your appropriate personal savings allowance. So taxed when you first earn it, and taxed even more you save and earn interest.

Healey pledges to bring down the UK’s welfare bill “in a Labour way” - which based on all available evidence actually means it will go up

Wait a minute, on gas prices...
By moving the cost of the standing charge on to the unit rate - has Andy Burnham actually just put up energy bills for the majority of Scots?
We are colder country & have to put the heating on more, the more gas we use, the higher price we pay!

Dave Doogan previously argued in a 2024 parliamentary debate that redistributing standing charges to the unit price would empower consumers to reduce usage and lower bills. heraldscotland.com/news/26676771.…

I earn £100 grand a year.
I have a detached house. 2 cars and my wife is a full time home maker.
I can just about afford this. I probably couldn’t afford the house I own if I was buying for the first time today.
My salary puts me in the top 5% of earners in the UK.
Top 5% to have a similar standard of living to Homer Simpson.
That is a disgrace.
We have a flatter salary distribution than Soviet Russia and the highest taxes and borrowing costs we’ve seen in generations.
Success is almost impossible because our tax system means hard work makes you a stressed out tax cow, not wealthy and certainly not free.
We need something radical.
Less state.
More family.
Less handouts.
More reward for risk.
Instead. Tomorrow, Labour will offer another batch of policies which will send one message to aspirational Brits: why bother.
I read a piece in the FT this week about the price of being middle class in Britain now and it said a couple earning £436,000 combined take home £216,000. That’s a crazy amount of tax, and it doesn't include VAT on purchases, council tax, stamp duty or other taxes (I think does include pension contributions). I can’t stop thinking about it.

Good news for energy security. Maggie Chapman is predictably against it. Preferring internittent and costly renewables. Despite those power sources being partly responsible for high energy costs here, not gas as is wrongly claimed in the article.
