Haley Stevens’ shameful last-minute endorsement of Mike Rogers triggered immediate and massive backlash. 1) More than half of her staff, including longtime chief of staff Justin German, resigned in protest. They backed Abdul El-Sayed and urged voters to support Democrats. 2) Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel said Stevens is no longer a party member and never will be. He accused her of lying to him, to Michigan Democrats, to Rep. Jim Clyburn, and to the people of Michigan. 3) Chuck Schumer called it a “despicable betrayal.” Nancy Pelosi said she “dangerously betrayed Michigan families” with a “horrific endorsement.” 4) Multiple House Democrats called the move “pathetic,” “petty,” “selfish,” and “unhinged,” with some saying she should be removed from the caucus. 5) Elissa Slotkin said she put herself above Michigan and democracy. Gary Peters called it “extremely disappointing.” The DNC’s Black Caucus chair called her a “sellout.” The scheme she cooked up with AIPAC and Mike Rogers backfired. It hurt them, united every faction of the Democratic Party behind Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, and just 12 hours later the New York Times’ most reliable poll showed him leading by 11 points.
