The problem was that the “conversation” was mostly about how much people hated paper straws. This high salience, low impact policy is the exact opposite of what we should have done. Instead replace grid generation with renewables. Nobody inconvenienced and huge impact.
Plastic straws were picked because their consumption is visible (used most often in public) and so by targeting plastic straws, those concerned about plastic use could more effectively use peer pressure to both dissuade plastic use & start conversations about plastic.

This is also reminding me ~7th-grade me used to play a Sims/Theme Park style game called "Theme Hospital" in which you build/manage a system of hospitals in the UK en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theme_…
The first videogame you ever play can alter your path in life. Really interesting read.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
This paper does not exist, and there is no such research journal as “Journal of Virtual Behavioral Sciences”. This X account posts fake, provocative, realistic screenshots of papers which do not exist. This is objectively satirical. The folks obsessively posting about egg prices for the past few years have gone strangely quiet just as egg prices hit an all-time high.

An overlooked answer to Ulam's request for social science ideas that are true and non-trivial: the theory of tax incidence. Almost no one without econ training gets that the person who sends a check to the govt isn't the person who loses money on net as a result of a tax.

A really great paper with compelling evidence that nursing homes illegally dump less profitable patients to make room for more profitable ones!

When estimating demand, the price coefficient may be biased because firms adjust prices in response to demand shocks. In this (forthcoming) paper, @NateHMiller and I show how to resolve this source of endogeneity by invoking the supply side in standard empirical models.
