I have spent 23 years documenting the global LED transition of city lighting from space.
Across my 4 missions to the ISS, I have photographed every major city on Earth, building a data set of the gradual replacement of sodium vapor lighting with LEDs.
The warmer, yellow-orange of gas discharge lamps has been phased out worldwide to multi-colored LEDs, citing energy savings and environmental reasons.
Widespread adoption has markedly changed the way our cities look from orbit, and as many have pointed out, how they feel to those on the ground!
Here is a collection of the most striking before-and-after photos I have observed:

One week since the launch of Nancy Grace Roman and we're eagerly awaiting those first photographs. 📸 🌌
Before we catch that first glimpse (anticipated for early 2027), Roman has a three-month and one-million-mile trip to Sun-Earth Lagrange point. Soon enough, the data from the telescope's wide view and infrared vision will help scientists survey our universe's deep history and phenomena like dark matter, dark energy and exoplanets.
Here's some additional content via one of our @talkingspace listeners. I find the stories of how we started and progressed to be very interesting. Thank you @infoshaman.bsky.social for sharing youtu.be/_uN_e13It2c?si=fmxB…
Our latest pod has just dropped! We discuss ISS crew transitions, wildfire threats to NASA's Deep Space Network, growing criticisms of the Artemis program architecture, and a 1960s navigation satellite still transmitting signals today. Check it out: talkingspaceonline.com/space…

Day 201 orbit 3115 — Let’s celebrate 200 days in space with an inspiring video! 🎉
My amazing support team at the European Astronaut Centre (EAC) launched the εpsilon Push-Up Challenge after liftoff: adding one push-up 💪 for every day of the εpsilon mission. Since then, it has spread to other ESA sites across Europe, and it means a lot to me to see so many people taking part!
And before my trainers and flight surgeons start worrying: this was filmed before the EVA marathon began... 😉
Thank you all and congratulations on completing more than 150,000 push-ups! Woohoo! Your collective energy is a real boost, and I'm lucky to have such an incredible team behind me 🫶

We’ve got our starglasses on! 🤩
Roman’s Coronagraph Instrument has activated. This system of masks, prisms, detectors, and self-flexing mirrors will block out the glare from distant stars and directly image the planets and disks in orbit around them.
