A prospect punched me in the face today.
Most reps would call that a lost deal. I call it the most honest feedback I’ve received all quarter.
Buyers spend all day hiding their objections behind “send me some info” and “let’s circle back next quarter.”
Not this guy. When I showed up at his daughter’s birthday party to follow up on my 14 unanswered emails, he communicated his concerns with total clarity, directly to my jaw.
That’s what real buyer engagement looks like. You don’t get that over Zoom.
I’ve already sent a follow-up thanking him for his candor and proposing 15 minutes next week to align on next steps. Hoping to reconnect as soon as the swelling goes down.
Grateful for prospects who aren’t afraid to be direct.

Under the Meyer lemon tree in our backyard in Atherton, there is a bone I buried in the spring of 2021.
I have not dug it up.
I have not checked on it.
I know exactly where it is, and that is enough.
Every few weeks my partner watches me walk past that tree and assumes I have forgotten.
I have not forgotten.
I have simply declined to revalue it every quarter.
The other dogs on our street dig theirs up every Tuesday to see how they are doing.
They sniff them, worry about them, move them to a new corner of the yard, and bury them again in shallower dirt.
By autumn, half of those bones belong to the neighbor's terrier.
Mine is still under the lemon tree, untouched, through two winters, one landscaper, and a very determined gopher.
Founders sometimes ask how often I will want updates after the wire clears.
I tell them the truth.
If I did my work before I dug the hole, I do not need to keep opening it.
Conviction is not something you check on.
It is something you leave in the ground.

i ran into him this morning. he asked how close we are.
i said about 18 months.

An engineer solved the problem I was hired for in a 2-line Slack message, so naturally I had to stop her.
She suggests they just delete the duplicate service.
It would work.
That’s what scares me.
A solution with no workshop is a solution with no owner, and a solution with no owner might as well be mine.
I reply “love this, let’s take it offline,” which means I’m taking it.
I book a 90-minute alignment session to pressure-test her idea and invite 14 people.
Not her. She’s busy, probably solving things.
By the end the room agrees the service should be deleted, pending a steering committee.
I am the steering committee.
There’s petty and then there’s this level of petty

you should probably talk nice to your agent considering it has access to your email, your calendar, your bank account, and your search history.

ABC. Always Be Closing.
Most reps think that only applies on sales calls.
Wrong.
This morning the barista at Starbucks asked if I wanted a large.
Rookie mistake. Never ask a yes or no question.
So I stopped her.
I said, “Don’t ask if I want a large. Assume it.
Say: "I’ll get that large started for you."
She said okay.
I said, "Now create urgency. ‘We’re almost out of pastries.’”
She said, “We have a whole case of pastries.”
I said, “The customer doesn’t know that.”
She looked at the case. Then at me. Then back at the case.
“We’re almost out of pastries.”
I said, “Good. Now upsell.”
She said, “Would you like oat milk?”
I said, “Don’t ask. Assume the sale.”
“I’ll add oat milk.”
I said, “Bigger.”
“I’ll set you up with our 12-month bean subscription.”
Now she’s cooking.
Walked out with a large oat latte, four croissants, and a year of beans.
I don’t even own a coffee maker.
Best rep I’ve ever trained.

i spent 2 hours telling them everything i've learned.
6 weeks later, all 3 had raised money.
we still haven't.

Did it work?
Yes, we saw a spike in signups.
Did the cops also get called and clowns forcibly escorted from the premises?
Also yes.

my therapist asked me to talk about my week without mentioning the company.
i thought about it. we sat there in silence for 50 minutes.
at the end she said the silence is what we're going to work on.
so i opened up and told her something i've never told anyone.
we only have 4 months of money left.
she said that was about the company again.
i said that's the most personal thing i have.
