If you earn £125k+ in Scotland, the government takes 50% of it
If you put the remainder in the bank to earn some interest, the government now takes 49% of that
Happy saving!
NEW. Additional tax on savings interest (outside of your personal savings allowance and cash ISAs) from April 2027
Basic rate taxpayer: 24% on savings interest and property income
Higher rate taxpayer: 44%
Top rate taxpayer: 49%
So the fact the cash ISA is staying at £20,000 per year is even more important. #Budget2026

In Britain they make you file your taxes every month, call people who earn over £50,000 ($65,000) a year “high earners”, and tax them at 40%
The hidden tax measure in the Budget is huge for people paying tax under self-assessment - sole traders, partners, landlords, retired investors.
For 6th April 2028-29, you currently pay 50% of your income tax late in the tax year in question (in January 2029), 50% just after the year end (in July 2029) with any make-up payment in January 2030.
Under the new proposals you will pay your tax perhaps monthly or quarterly (TBC) from April 2029 onwards. A rough analysis suggests the impact is to draw about 50% of your tax bill forward, a huge cashflow boost to HMRC and a significant funding issue for the self-employed.
The Treasury recognises this, and expects to raise £1.3bn of additional tax in 29/30 as a result of this change.
The cashflow impact of the accelerated charge will send some businesses to the wall.

I understand from my accountants that Business Asset Disposal Relief has been reduced from £1m to £500,000. There are also a number of conditions the business and individual needs to comply with before they qualify.

Now that I've successfully shamed Jon Ronson off X, it falls to @louistheroux and @DAaronovitch to explain why they continue to look the other way while men like this sexually humiliate female students and colleagues.

An electric car mileage tax starts in April 2028, at 3p per mile.
Electric cars were never about helping the environment, it was a means for the government to take more of your money and thus more of your freedom.

I predict
1 it will now become permanent
2 the pension will go up in real terms
3 the personal allowance will go down in real terms.
So in say ten years this will become a serious disincentive to people in their late 60s working part-time.
