The harbinger Pink Floyd album of great things to come
55 years ago today, on October 30, 1971, Pink Floyd released Meddle in the US, a week ahead of its November 5 release in the UK.
Following Atom Heart Mother, the band began work at Abbey Road in January 1971 and recorded in between tours all year, moving to AIR and Morgan Studios in London for their 16-track machines. The result closed with "Echoes," the 23-minute epic that fills all of side two.
When Meddle came out, Pink Floyd were on a 27-date North American tour that had opened at Winterland in San Francisco on October 15, with "Echoes" already in the set. Just weeks earlier they had filmed in the Roman amphitheatre at Pompeii.
The album also gave us "One of These Days," "Fearless" with the Liverpool Kop singing "You'll Never Walk Alone," and "Seamus."
