they're calling it "Black October" and i don't think people realize how serious this is
in the last three weeks there have been more than 20 major cybersecurity incidents. not in a year. not in a quarter. in three weeks
any ONE of these would normally be the biggest story of the year
PHP: two critical holes in the code behind about 70% of websites. severity 9.2 out of 10. governments pulled their own sites offline
GitLab: where companies store their code. a perfect 10 out of 10 severity hole in every version since 2014
Railway: a service that runs apps for other companies was hacked. it told all users to replace their secret keys
LiteLLM: an AI tool downloaded about 23 million times a week shipped a password stealer for about two hours
Zeabur: an app hosting service says 321,810 accounts were hit. it's shutting down by the end of the year
Microsoft: says a China-aligned hacking group used AI helpers against hundreds of organizations. some fully taken over in under 3 hours
Ahold Delhaize: the owner of Food Lion and Stop & Shop pulled its websites and apps offline after an attack
and that's not even half the list
AI helpers are now doing the hacking. one hacker broke into more than 100 companies with them. about $50 a break-in
security experts are openly rattled. one at Johns Hopkins calls the internet "dry tinder". a former OpenAI researcher says it feels like March 1, 2020 for online security and asks if internet lockdowns are a couple of months away
if you run a website, use cloud apps, or keep passwords and keys saved online you are potentially affected
update everything. change your passwords on key accounts. turn on two-step login (2FA) everywhere. back up what you can't lose
this is not a normal week on the internet. this is something different
Indians to pump xmr to trillion
INDIA TO IDENTIFY ALL TELEGRAM, WHATSAPP AND SIGNAL USERS WITH "SIM BINDING"
India is set to enforce "SIM binding" for major messaging apps from around January 1, 2027.
What is the ruling
The Department of Telecommunications (@DoT_India) directed platforms including WhatsApp (@WhatsApp), Telegram (@telegram), Signal (@signalapp), Snapchat (@Snapchat), others in 2025 to keep accounts continuously linked to the specific active SIM used for registration.
If that SIM is removed, deactivated or swapped, the app should stop working on the device until the correct SIM is present and verified.
iOS has long blocked apps from directly reading SIM status or hardware identifiers. Apple (@Apple) released a software patch in September that lets apps detect when an iPhone lacks a SIM card, making compliance possible for messaging apps. Apple has not issued a detailed public statement on its reasoning. Earlier queries to the company went unanswered.
What it means for online privacy
The rule does not break end-to-end encryption. It does, however, strengthen the permanent link between a messaging account, a telecom-issued phone number, and the owner's identity.
The Department of Telecommunications runs platforms such as the Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP) and Sanchar Saathi (TAFCOP). These aggregate connection data across operators so authorities can see how SIMs are linked to an individual's verified identity.
Claimed motivation
The government want to identify everyone online.
The government says the rule closes a loophole that lets accounts keep working after the SIM is removed or the number is used from abroad. This has been exploited for phishing, impersonation, "digital arrest" scams and other fraud. Officials cite large cyber-fraud losses and argue that tying accounts to KYC-verified telecom identities improves traceability, similar to existing SIM/device binding already used in banking and UPI (@NPCI_NPCI) apps.
Experts' opinion
Fraudsters routinely obtain SIMs with weak or fake KYC, use them briefly, and discard them. Binding does little against that or against malware, phishing kits and session hijacking.
Industry groups such as IAMAI (@IAMAIForum) have argued the rule mainly creates friction for ordinary users while leaving core attack vectors largely intact,
India's record on using online deanonymising tools
India has a documented pattern of using legal, technical, and policing tools to restrict online speech, target critics, and limit communications during protests—actions frequently criticized by human-rights organisations as disproportionate or politically selective. The new SIM-binding and related telecom identification rules increase the technical capacity to track identity-linked communications, raising the practical risk of similar misuse even if the stated purpose is "fraud prevention".
Reporters Without Borders (@RSF_inter) ranked India 157th out of 180 in its 2026 World Press Freedom Index. RSF and others cite violence against journalists, heavy concentration of media ownership linked to figures close to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (@BJP4India), and the increasing use of criminal laws against reporters and critics.
Section 69A of the IT Act is the main blocking tool. In 2026, orders have targeted satirical cartoons critical of the prime minister, fact-checker posts, media outlets such as The Wire (@thewire_in), and accounts posting political criticism or mockery.
In October 2026, during demonstrations in Delhi linked to voter-roll revisions and the "Cockroach Janta Party" movement, which criticised the Election Commission (@ECISVEEP), authorities imposed mobile-internet blackouts, conducted mass detentions (including opposition leaders such as Rahul Gandhi and journalists, and reportedly monitored messaging groups.
What can concerned Indians do?
Practical steps for Indians concerned about online privacy are limited by mandatory SIM ID checks, biometric rules, and SIM-binding requirements, but they can still meaningfully reduce exposure.
True anonymity is difficult in India because almost all consumer SIMs are tied to verified identity through ID checks and increasingly biometric checks.
👉 Prefer Signal for sensitive conversations. It has stronger default end-to-end encryption and collects less metadata than WhatsApp. Both will still be subject to SIM-binding, but Signal's design is more privacy-oriented.
👉 Use a reputable no-logs VPN (Mullvad (@mullvadnet), Proton VPN (@ProtonVPN) for sensitive browsing or public Wi-Fi. Note that CERT-In (@IndianCERT) logging rules led most privacy-focused providers to remove physical servers from India; many now offer virtual Indian IPs hosted abroad.
👉 Enable disappearing messages, turn off read receipts where possible, and verify safety numbers for important contacts.
👉 Restrict who can see your phone number, profile photo, last seen, and "about" status (set to "My contacts" or "Nobody").
👉 Avoid using the same number for banking, government services, and casual or sensitive chats if you can manage a second number within the legal 9-SIM limit.
