I found a weird star with Argon's help. Gaia DR3 4582145718700356096.
It's normal in visible light, stable and similar to our sun. In March 2010 it appeared ~60x brighter than expected in deep infrared heat (22 microns).
As if something around Mars-distance is catching 1.3% of the star's light and radiating it as heat.
Probably a huge cloud of debris from a major planetary collision. Or a radio-silent galaxy hiding behind it. But also the tiniest chance it's a technosignature.
Captured by NASA's WISE telescope, no observations at that wavelength since. Needs more data.

I am teaching my daughter how to read with an app I built while also learning to teach a kid how to read along the way
It's pretty fun when we're both pushing our own edges together
It's true! You can make the most tailored educational software imaginable just for your child in about an hour.
As an example, my 6 year-old loves to play a game called Dress to Impress, but I only let her play it occasionally. The other morning, she asked me if she could play the game more often if she had to spell a word to take moves in the game. I thought this was brilliant and so we asked Claude to recreate the game but also apply the best educational research on learning spelling. We spent 10 minutes prompting it with all of our design ideas. In an hour she was testing it out and super psyched.
After she playtests it, she has feedback and ideas: like "what if we had a quiz before each level that could figure out which words I know and don't know and then only give me the ones I don't know."
We get to collaborate and she's learning about spelling, vibe-coding, play testing, educational leveling, and game mechanics. And both my four-year-old and 6-year-old have unbounded creative ideas for how to make games.

This is an issue for parental controls too. Companies think that what parents want is a "no sex and violence" filter, and some do, but a lot of us instead want "this video isn't a waste of my kids' lives."
This is an incredible project: NBC News asked parents to check their kids' YouTube history during school hours — and the results show kids are spending huge chunks of the day watching videos that have nothing to do with learning

I'm finally joining the 'write every day' crew - it feels especially important as I produce more and more with the help of LLMs to have a practice that is just my own brain.
Day 1 is about how it's not just a practice of writing but also vulnerability.

Of course inspiration for this came from watching @AlmostMedia do this every day for six years has been such a good lesson in how we only get better at the things we do regularly. So here it goes

Just because the culture around us is falling into cruelty and psychosis does not mean *we* need to do the same.
Remember you don't have to "go with it"

We need adult lobbies so when we get wrecked it's at least by dudes of a respectable age.
Ben Affleck says he spent 3 years at home playing StarCraft after becoming famous
“There was a game called StarCraft that probably took the most life out of me for a period of time. I had just got famous and all I did was stay home for three years and play StarCraft”
“I love Valorant. It's a great game. The problem with that game is that with kids that have been raised playing, I just get f**king rocked. I'm like, ‘Are you f**king cheating?’ And I get mad. It's very humiliating”
“I love 2K. I love Madden. And the early Doom, when I first played that game, which then gave rise to Quake. We played that endlessly for hours when we were doing Good Will Hunting. I remember writing and taking these long breaks to play Doom”
Tweet of the year. I loved every sentence.
My bf and I made the mistake of going to an experimental coffee pop-up in NYC. We’d just spent an insane amount of time walking in the pouring rain and we were tired, hungry, and desperately in need of caffeine so decided to pull up. The line was a sea of microbangs and enormous trousers. Everyone looked like they could explain the history of a lamp for 45 minutes without ever mentioning whether it provides light. In retrospect, this should have been sufficient warning that we were about to order some bullshit.
In our exhausted state, we ordered the special without bothering to look at the ingredients. This was a stupid oversight, because the special contained espresso, dashi milk, kombu, fermented rice, and fucking FISH FLAKES. In coffee. A beautiful beverage that has enjoyed a dignified existence for ages without the involvement of marine life!!!
I’m increasingly convinced this entire subculture is locked in a status-signaling arms race where the ability to enjoy something is actually a mark against it. A normal latte tastes good, which is precisely why it has 0 cultural value. Any idiot can enjoy a latte. To demonstrate that you possess taste and a truly sophisticated palate, you must drink something that tastes like the drainage system of a fish market, maintain a pensive expression, and comment on its “complexity”. Bc why were ppl at the cafe pretending to enjoy ts lmao
And the beautiful thing is nobody can call bs. Because the second you admit you don’t like the fishy espresso, you’ve exposed yourself as an uncultured moron incapable of appreciating experimental gastronomy. The entire status hierarchy of this subculture depends on everyone being too terrified of appearing unsophisticated to admit that something tastes like shit. The highest compliment you can pay a drink in these circles isn’t “delicious,” it’s “interesting,” which the universal term for something you suspect you're supposed to admire but would never voluntarily experience twice.
So everyone just keeps escalating. Today it’s a fish latte, tomorrow it’s a sardine cortado garnished with a single cigarette ash, and 30 people in those fuckass Tabi shoes will call it some shit like “challenging but rewarding”. Someone will write an essay about how the discomfort is actually the point, etc etc
It’s a prisoner’s dilemma sitch. Everyone is pretending to enjoy progressively more repulsive things because nobody wants to be the first person to admit that the emperor is naked and his coffee tastes like a tide pool.
Nobody actually wants fish coffee. They want to be the sort of person who has tried fish coffee. The beverage itself is completely incidental to the performance of having taste.
The coffee is more of a loyalty test than a beverage.
And tbc, nobody forced us to go. We are two grown adults who willingly stood in that line and proceeded with the transaction. We are going to get pumpkin spice lattes now.
Ps: Of course it was $37.58 for the two fuckass drinks.
Oh NYC.
