The Dog Stars Floored by how good it is. There is specificity to how the film portrays grief and hope. The mundane details accumulate meaning as the film goes on. There is nothing else out there but each other. I hope Ridley found what Hig found by making this film.

It is also jaw dropping how good this film looks. Everything is tactile. The flight scenes and aerial photography are some of the best you have seen. Every action scene has gonzo energy. Ridley’s best looking late period film along with The Last Duel.

People just make stuff up and say with confidence. Every single Lee’s films won best picture awards in major Korean film awards. Every single films topped Cine 21 best Korean film of the year. Bong or Park can’t even match the local critic track record of Lee.

One Korean director who is so beloved by my film twitter oomfies in the US but gets tepid responses from my critic and cinephile friends in Korea is Lee Chang-dong… though it’s not uncommon for the latter to really like his novels (myself in that camp as well)

all of them. just because Mann primarily makes movies about masculinity and male protagonists doesn't mean the women in his movies aren't equally formidable, fully dimensional. they aren't plot devices or purely decorative, they have interiority. they're essential to the story.
