A major milestone in strengthening Uganda’s industrial power infrastructure. UETCL has received three 80MVA transformers destined for the Kabalega Substation at the Hoima Industrial Park. These critical assets will enhance power reliability and capacity to support strategic national investments in the Albertine region. Once installed, the transformers will provide the backbone of the electrical infrastructure required to power the @EACOP_, petrochemical industries, and other industrial installations, further advancing Uganda’s journey towards industrialisation, energy security, and economic transformation.

Nothing beats seeing progress firsthand. I had the pleasure of accompanying the UETCL Board of Directors, led by Chairman Mr. @KwameEjalu, as we evaluated ongoing key projects from our new HQ in Lugogo to vital transmission line developments at Bujagali Substation and the Bujagali - Tororo Transmission Line. We (@uetcl) are no longer just managing grid growth; our in-house talents are directly driving major infrastructure developments using internal resources. Huge appreciation to the Board of Directors for their continued stewardship and staff for their dedication, technical excellence, and commitment to working safely.

𝐔𝐄𝐓𝐂𝐋: €𝟑𝟒𝟐.𝟔 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐊𝐚𝐫𝐮𝐦𝐚–𝐓𝐨𝐫𝐨𝐫𝐨 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐔𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚’𝐬 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐆𝐫𝐢𝐝 The Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Uganda’s electricity transmission network following the groundbreaking of the €342.6 million Karuma–Tororo 400kV transmission line project. Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, UETCL Board Chairperson Kwame Ejalu said the project is a strategic national investment that will strengthen bulk power supply to Eastern Uganda and the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area, while supporting industrialisation, job creation and regional electricity trade. The project will involve approximately 347 kilometres of 400kV transmission line traversing 15 districts, alongside associated substations and other infrastructure. Ejalu explained that Uganda’s investments in electricity generation, including the 600MW Karuma Hydropower Plant, must be matched by adequate transmission infrastructure to ensure that electricity is delivered efficiently, reliably and securely to households, businesses and industries. “Ultimately, its success is not merely about the kilometres of transmission line or substations, but the reliability, economic opportunity and regional connectivity it delivers for generations to come,” he said. The Board Chairperson noted that the project aligns with Uganda’s Fourth National Development Plan, Vision 2040, the Energy Policy 2023 and UETCL’s Corporate Strategic Plan 2025–2030. He commended the Government of Uganda, the Government of Sweden and Standard Chartered Bank for supporting the project, describing the partnership as an example of how national development priorities can be advanced through international cooperation and innovative financing. Ejalu called on contractors, consultants, Government agencies and other stakeholders to uphold high standards of accountability, safety and workmanship while ensuring value for money and timely project delivery. He also emphasised the importance of fair and transparent compensation and resettlement processes, urging all stakeholders to treat project-affected persons with dignity and respect. The Board Chairperson further called on communities along the transmission route to protect electricity infrastructure against vandalism, warning that damage to power installations disrupts electricity supply and diverts resources that could otherwise support network expansion and improvement. “Electricity infrastructure is a shared responsibility,” he said, urging the public to report suspicious activities. #OpenGovUg

𝐒𝐰𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐦𝐬 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐔𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚 𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 Sweden has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Uganda’s energy sector through strategic partnerships, technical expertise and project financing, as Government expands electricity transmission infrastructure to support industrialisation and economic growth. Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Karuma–Tororo transmission line and associated substations, the Ambassador of Sweden to Uganda, H.E. Anna Maria, said the project demonstrates the impact of cooperation between the two countries in advancing Uganda’s energy development priorities. The Ambassador noted that Uganda had made significant progress in expanding electricity access and increasing generation capacity over the past 15 years, with the country’s focus increasingly shifting towards strengthening transmission capacity, improving reliability and facilitating regional electricity trade. She said the project would help evacuate power from Uganda’s 600MW Karuma Hydropower Plant towards Eastern Uganda, strengthen the national transmission grid and create opportunities for electricity trade across the East African region. “Together, we are not only building transmission lines and substations, but the foundations for future growth, prosperity and opportunity,” she said. H.E. Anna Maria highlighted the role of Swedish companies, including Kalpataru Power Transmission, Hitachi Energy and other technical partners, alongside Swedish export credit institutions and Standard Chartered Bank, in supporting the development of critical energy infrastructure. She noted that Swedish companies have contributed to Uganda’s energy sector for decades, including through support for hydropower infrastructure, and reaffirmed Sweden’s commitment to deepening cooperation in renewable energy, infrastructure development, capacity building and project financing. The Ambassador also highlighted ongoing cooperation under the energy Memorandum of Understanding between Sweden and Uganda’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, which provides a framework for continued engagement and collaboration among stakeholders in the sector. She commended the Government of Uganda, through the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development and the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL), for working with international partners to advance the project. The transmission line and associated substations are expected to strengthen electricity delivery to Eastern Uganda, support industrial development, attract investment, create employment opportunities and improve access to reliable power for economic and social services. The project reflects Uganda’s continued efforts to strengthen its electricity transmission network and ensure that growing power generation capacity translates into reliable electricity supply for industries, businesses and communities. #OpenGovUg
