Left: Susanna Reid, "65% of your own constituents in Makerfield voted to leave the EU. Have you let them down or are you telling them they made the wrong decision?" Right: In Beth Rigby's recent focus group from Makerfield, Leave voters said they want to rejoin the EU Brexiter 1, "I voted to leave.. Much younger then.. Didn't understand it.. Dad told me to vote for Leave.. It's harder now.. Maybe it would be better if we went back" Brexiter 2, "Everything seemed better when we were in Europe, it just did" Brexiter 3, "I think we were over-promised things.. I think we would be much better as part of an EU.. Than on our own" My view: Susanna Reid's question assumes that because an estimated 65% of Makerfield voted Leave in 2016, those voters must still support Brexit today. But Beth Rigby's focus group tells a rather different story. Here are people who actually voted Leave, openly acknowledging that they were influenced by others, didn't fully understand the consequences, or believed promises that haven't materialised. And that distinction matters. Changing your mind after ten years of lived experience isn't an admission of stupidity. It's an acknowledgement that new evidence deserves consideration. What's particularly interesting is that this isn't simply a handful of dissatisfied voters. A More in Common poll found that 45% of Makerfield residents would now vote to rejoin the EU, compared with 38% who would stay outside. Of course, not every Leave voter has changed their mind. But neither should politicians or journalists assume that a vote cast in 2016 represents an unchanging opinion in 2026. The question shouldn't be whether Andy Burnham is betraying the voters of Makerfield by reconsidering Brexit. It should be whether politicians are listening to what those voters are telling them today, rather than assuming they must believe exactly what they believed a decade ago. Democracy isn't about freezing public opinion in time. It's about allowing people to reconsider decisions when the evidence changes.

A strange political twist. While far-right parties gain ground in France đŸ‡«đŸ‡·, Germany đŸ‡©đŸ‡Ș and the UK 🇬🇧 Voters in Serbia đŸ‡·đŸ‡ž, Hungary 🇭đŸ‡ș, Romania đŸ‡·đŸ‡Ž and Poland đŸ‡”đŸ‡± have pushed back against nationalist forces, some with close ties to Putin. Thoughts?

Left: President Trump says that if Abdul El-Sayed wins he'll end Christmas Right: Abdul El-Sayed celebrating Christmas with his team, picking a tree, and wishing everyone a Merry Christmas My view: Trump says Abdul El-Sayed would end Christmas if elected. That’s not an argument about policy; it’s a calculated attempt to make a Muslim candidate seem like a threat to Christian America. The point is to make people fear his faith before they even consider his ideas: to suggest that a Muslim in public office must be hostile to Christians and their traditions. That’s a cynical appeal to anti-Muslim prejudice, dressed up as a warning about Christmas. The President of the United States, Donald Trump, is trying to turn religious difference into suspicion - and prejudice into a political weapon.

I feel for Danny Kruger. He's a decent guy and when he defected to Reform he had no idea it would end up engaging in this type of racial politics - or that that he'd end up in interviews like this. But Tim's right: in a party full of moments, this is a moment.
🚹 COMING UP: Reform UK's Danny Kruger REFUSES to condemn high-profile Reformer's 'disgusting slur' towards Kemi Badenoch... You won't want to miss this... 🎧 Tune in from 4:30pm with @CamillaTominey and @timothy_stanley through the link in our bio

There was of course no vote in 2016 to leave the Single Market/EEA, thus no vote to end (the 4 freedoms) FoM. Indeed this was the ("Norway or Switzerland") option sold to us by the leading Brexiters...and was always the best way to satisfy the majority of that 52/48 split.
At last a post #Brexit PM who is being honest with the British people about the benefits of free movement. FWIW IMO @andyburnham is honest & determined to strengthen our economy & make the UK a better, fairer, more prosperous & safer place for all its people.

“You’re a horrible little reporter, aren’t you?” If any previous president had said that to a reporter at the White House, a female reporter in particular, it would have been a multi-day scandal. But we as a country and media have normalized this boorish, abusive misogynist.
YIKES 😳 Trump snaps at a reporter asking him about why he's dismissing sexual abuse allegations 👇 WOMAN REPORTER: Do the sexual abuse allegations mean nothing to you, sir? TRUMP: Wait. Wait! Wait wait wait. Slow down. Who are you with? REPORTER: NBC, sir. But they are very serious sexual abuse allegations TRUMP: Quiet! Isn't she a fresh person? You're a horrible little reporter, aren't you?

If you have doubts about whether a phone caller is who they say, find a different phone and call a number you know is valid. (This applies most to landlines. The original caller can stay on the line but play a dialtone so that you think you're calling out when you're not.)

Recently I’ve seen a lot of people complaining about being asked to clean an Airbnb when they’ve already paid a cleaning fee As a host, I find this attitude quite worrying My wife and I rent out the apartment in Germany. We charge a €145 cleaning fee, and we still expect guests to: 1. Strip the beds and start a wash, separating whites from colours 2. Wash, dry and put away all dishes 3. Sweep and mop the floors 4. Take out all rubbish, separating paper, cardboard, clear glass, coloured glass, plastics, metal, organic waste and residual waste 5. Take bottles with a deposit to the supermarket return machine. 6. Send photos showing the apartment is ready before the 8:30am checkout These tasks must be completed before departure. If you have an early flight, allow time the evening before The cleaning fee pays for professional cleaning. It does not pay for someone to pick up after you Here in Europe, we teach children to leave a place as they found it I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect the same from adults on holiday

I live in a small MAGA town. I know MAGA people. I drink with them. I talk to them. I study them. They’re not the loud Twitter yappers, at least most of them. They’re quieter. Slower. But the delusion runs deep, just bottled up in passive smiles and soft voices. A few weeks ago, one of them tried to convert me at a bar. He knew I wasn’t into the Trump cult, but he started soft. Calm voice. Friendly tone. “Mario, you’re white. You can drink a lot, you eat meat, “he was just surprised that I was eating rare burger” and drinking vodka chasing it with Guinness. He also said, “You’re one of us. You should feel proud.” That’s their seduction tactic. Not facts. Not logic. Just subtle tribal grooming. “You’re white. You drink. You belong.” It was almost sweet, in a sad, culty way. Like a Jehovah’s Witness trying to sell you eternal life with a shaky brochure and cheap suit. But let’s talk about the whole ecosystem. The truth. MAGA men? Most are not warriors. They’re out-of-shape, insecure, jealous small-town boys who peaked in high school, still clinging to stories from when they “almost went pro” or “should’ve been in the military.” They’re proud of being able to drink a case of light beer, drive a truck, and scream about freedom while their knees buckle from sugar and rage. They’re easy to manipulate because they don’t ask questions. They don’t read. They react. They memorize memes like scripture and repeat them like gospel. They think being loud equals being right. They think the world is laughing with them. It’s not. The world’s laughing at them, when it’s not just ignoring them entirely. MAGA women? They’re caught in a brutal paradox, constantly screaming about how proud and strong they are, while reshaping every inch of their body to meet a fake beauty standard pushed by the very system they claim to hate. Plastic lips. Inflated cheeks. Eyelashes thick as windshield wipers. Trying to look rich while shopping clearance at Walmart. They scream about “natural family values” while injecting Botox and collapsing into MLM scams that promise empowerment through overpriced lipstick. They mock liberals for being “gender confused” while wearing more synthetic parts than a Barbie made in a Russian factory. Here’s the thing: MAGA America isn’t just backward. It’s boring. MAGA folks are simply subsimple. There’s nothing imaginative about it. No new culture. No innovation. No ideas. They don’t invent, they imitate. They don’t challenge, they chant. It’s the same five phrases over and over. The same flag. The same truck. The same outfit. Patriot cosplay. And that’s why the world doesn’t just hate MAGA. It forgets it. Because once the shouting stops, there’s nothing under the hood. Just cheap beer breath, fake smiles, and a belief that whiteness and loudness are still enough to matter. You want the brutal truth? Even without Trump, even without the cult, most of them would still be irrelevant. Not because they’re evil. But because they chose comfort over growth. Tribalism over truth. Imitation over imagination. They don’t want to understand the world. They want the world to stay small enough to understand them. And that’s the saddest, most humiliating part.
