The afternoon hung over Tombstone like a held breath, dry and brittle, the dust in Fremont Street rising in little puffs under the boots of men who had come to the end of words. Virgil Earp walked at the head of them, the city marshal, his face set in the hard lines of duty that had already cost him sleep and patience. Behind him came his brothers, Wyatt and Morgan, and the thin, coughing figure of Doc Holliday, the shotgun cradled in the crook of his arm like a man carrying a tool he knew how to use. They were not a posse in the grand sense. They were four men walking toward a vacant lot where the law had been dared, and where the dare would be answered.
In the lot the cowboys waited. Ike Clanton, loud and empty-handed once the threats had been made, stood with his brother Billy and the McLaury boys, Frank and Tom. They had been drinking and talking big through the night and the morning; now the talking was done. The space between the two parties was no more than a few paces, close enough that a man could see the sweat on another man鈥檚 lip and the way a hand hovered near a pistol butt. Virgil called for them to throw up their hands. Someone moved. Someone else fired.
The noise came all at once, a ragged tearing of air that filled the narrow lot and bounced off the adobe walls. Smoke bloomed and hung, bitter and gray. Men staggered and spun. Billy Clanton went down still working his gun; Frank McLaury, hit and dying, managed a shot that found Virgil鈥檚 leg and dropped him. Morgan Earp was hit in the shoulder, and Tom McLaury took the blast of Doc鈥檚 shotgun in the chest and folded, as a bullet grazed Doc's hip. Ike ran. In the space of half a minute the lot was a place of groaning and the sharp stink of powder, three men dead or dying, the others wounded or standing in the sudden quiet with the ringing still in their ears. Wyatt had not been touched. He looked at what the law and the guns had made of the afternoon, and the dust settled again on the bodies and the empty street.
Epilog: Sheriff John Behan of Cochise County, who witnessed the shootout, charged the Earps and Doc with murder. However, the Tombstone judge found them not guilty, ruling they were, "Fully justified in committing these homicides."
DEADLY DENTIST
Throughout his lifetime, John Henry "Doc" Holiday (Right) was known by many of his peers as a tempered, calm, southern gentleman. In an 1896 article Wyatt Earp said:
"I found him a loyal friend and good company. He was a dentist whom necessity had become a gambler; a gentleman whose disease had made a vagabond; a philosopher whom life had made a caustic wit; a long lean blonde fellow nearly dead with consumption and at the same time the most skillful gambler and nerviest, speediest, deadliest man with a six gun I ever knew."

Black Holes A Black Hole occurs when an imploding star continues beyond the neutron stage. Its gravitational forces become so strong that even light cannot escape and nothing can prevent it from growing. If the universe doesn't die first, they will eat up all the matter in our galaxy.
