"Rats in a Trap" Guadalcanal Oct 5 1942 That afternoon Chesty Puller led his men across a series of grassy ridges until, pausing at the highest, he saw the ravine below him was swarming with Japanese. At the same moment he received orders to scout the coastal road toward Kukumbona and avoid combat. Chesty asked and obtained permission to stay where he was, for he had found a whole Japanese Battalion under his guns. The ravine became a slaughter pen. Marine mortars fell with deadly accuracy. They forced the Japanese to come swarming up one side of the ridge into the massed firepower of Puller's men. They fled back down the ravine, sometimes rolling down in terror, and went sprinting through that devastating hell of mortar fire in an attempt to escape up the other side. But when they emerged, they were in full view of the Americans and were once again riddled. Pitifully, pathetically, they ran the same gauntlet again, but in reverse, and this time the carnage was thickened by the artillery shells and aerial bombs Puller called down on them.💥 700 Japanese fell in that in that hideous trap.
