Not entirely true, but sure seems directionally true.
You should be living your life with the assumption that money won’t mean much in ten years from now and health choices that take more than a decade to show symptoms are practically useless. Take that vacation. Smoke that cigarette. Just don’t die 🫡

HOLY SHIT. openai just announced a series of enormous scientific breakthroughs from its internal ai models > proved the local smoothing conjecture in all dimensions, resolving kakeya and stein’s restriction conjectures > disproved the exponential time hypothesis, a foundational assumption behind hundreds of computer science papers > produced existence proofs for QCD and a unified completion of the standard model > proved the existence part of yang–mills theory, connected to a $1 million millennium prize problem several of these results have already been formalized in lean, and some of the biggest names in mathematics and theoretical physics are now involved in examining them. this is getting completely insane.

The @kevinroose book The AGI Chronicles is really good. The Google chapter should be required reading for everyone working in a corporate environment on what not to do. Many of the details were known, but seeing them all together is so painful. By the mid-2010s, AI is the official focus of the company. They have virtually all the best researchers, the most compute, all the data, the cloud and consumer business to plug it into, and founders who are obsessed with it. They have not one, but two, internal, at-scale teams (Brain and Deepmind) pursuing AI, one in Europe, one in the US. The two teams hate each other and don’t collaborate. Google introduces the phrase “Large Language Model”, and invents the transformer architecture, and techniques like mixture of experts and distillation for neural networks. By 2020 Google has an internal LLM called Meena that was trained on an internet sized text corpus and rolled out as a prototype to the company. It’s immensely popular. The researchers behind it write a memo “Meena Eats Google” laying out the competitive threat from LLMs and calling it a trillion dollar opportunity if they launch it publicly. The project is immediately enmeshed in interteam politics with search feeling that a chatbot shouldn’t be allowed as it will confuse people who also enter questions into search. The phrase “Meena Eats Google” is considered very hostile by Google’s many teams working on AI and it is renamed to “Meena Eats The World”. The researchers are all caught up in a pre-existing world view of classical ML, and each researcher is pursuing a pet paradigm. They all criticize LLMs for not using their techniques. Teams working on making AI more politically correct call LLMs “stochastic parrots” and don’t want models trained on real world data as that contains disparities and could perpetuate racism and sexism. The Meena effort is criticized as sexist for giving the AI a female name, and a memo is written demanding that no one refer to Meena as she. Ultimately the talented people get frustrated and leave for Google, and, as it comes into existence, Anthropic. Google isn’t out of the race, but somehow managed to fumble the biggest lead imaginable and now has to play catch up to formerly broke no-name startups with research teams who are all ex-Google. Oofda.

Sama says "I no longer think we're gonna be able to just patch all the bugs." If accurate, this means 2 things: 1) The internet as we know it is over. 2) We very, very obviously need to stop AI advancement **before** the same becomes true of bio.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman: "I don't even know a dramatic enough word to use… models can find bugs that are outside of the normal threat model of what we think a hacker can do… hardware-level, insane stuff… I no longer think we're gonna be able to just patch all the bugs."

This is a great tragic opus, regardless of whether you understand finance
A conversation that has happened many times in banking, with various flavor texts, from fintech to public banking to microfinance. A: We think there is an opportunity to write loans to an underserved population. B: At usuriously high rates? A: No, at usual rates. Maybe lower.

President Trump says that Sundar Pichai talked him out of renaming the Atlantic Ocean. 'And I spoke to a brilliant guy, Sundar, he heads all of Google, he's a brilliant guy. Sergey and Sundar, totally brilliant guys. You know, they're still rattled from the Gulf. And I said, "Sundar, I'm thinking of the Atlantic Ocean, can you handle it?" "No, no, no, this time I’m not doing it," he said. He said, "Oceans are different, sir. You know, they cover, they cover really a lot of countries. Please don’t ask us to do that."
Google Maps this morning officially renamed Lake Ontario to Lake America inside the US. President Trump said last week to reporters that he may rename an ocean to the American Ocean next, but has to decide between the Atlantic and Pacific.

Whats happening right now is probably way worse than the Hugging Face incident. AI-powered attacks are hitting real organizations while major platforms disclose breaches and critical flaws. - Microsoft reports AI agents targeting hundreds of organizations, reaching privileged cloud access in under three hours in multiple cases. It attributes the ConnectWise compromise to the same group. - CrowdStrike documented four operators running successful AI-agent campaigns. One compromised at least 15 Argentine healthcare organizations. - PHP2Shell: AI helped turn longstanding PHP flaws into working exploits. Cloudflare’s CEO reports millions of exploitation attempts. Their AI involvement is unknown. - Railway disclosed possible access to customer secrets. LiteLLM shipped a backdoored release. Zeabur confirmed another breach and is shutting down. - GitLab patched a maximum-severity flaw affecting 12 years of releases. Node.js patched a serious code-execution vulnerability, with Vercel deploying firewall protections. Feels like a turningpoint.

I think we’ll see a lot more of this. The attackers were going after the AI keys stored on Railway, because an API key is basically a credit card for compute now. Every company running agents is sitting on a pile of these keys! here’s the 10 minute fix. rotate every key tonight, set a hard monthly spend limit in each AI dashboard, give every agent its own key, and turn on usage alerts so you know the second something spikes. someone should build the tool that finds every AI key a company has, rotates them every week and pings you when spend looks weird. charge $99 a month. every startup running agents needs it yesterday.
Railway has been hacked.

Be careful when developing on macOS now. Apple did not yet revoke the vulnerable certificates, so /usr/bin/curl still trusts them because. $ curl dv-g3b-emudhra.we-have-a-pro… Your client successfully connected to the site. That's bad! Workaround: mkdir -p ~/.config/certs awk '/^(###|===) /{skip=0} /^=== .*\/CN=(AAA Certificate Services|emSign ECC Root CA - G3)$/{skip=1} !skip' /etc/ssl/cert.pem > ~/.config/certs/cert.pem echo 'export CURL_CA_BUNDLE="$HOME/.config/certs/cert.pem"' >> ~/.zshrc source ~/.zshrc This only fixes curl. Update certifi, Go, pip/Python, Node, Docker images etc. separately.
The most accurate security advisory of the year fit in 5 words! Someone obtained the private keys of eight intermediate certificate authorities, which means they could issue a trusted certificate for any website on the internet. To prove it, the reporter signed the same short note with all eight keys: “We have a problem here.” Chrome, Apple, Firefox blocked the certificates. They are revoked but that helps software that actually checks revocation. And most software has bad track record here. The real fix falls to those who maintain list of trusted certificates. Ubuntu, Arch, Go, Python and Rust shipped patches. Debian, FreeBSD, “pending" emudhra.we-have-a-problem.co…

‼️ BREAKING: The private keys of 8 certificates from Indian certificate authority eMudhra were compromised, Mozilla says. Firefox blocked them within 3 hours. Each key should be a 116-digit number, but one was just 4. Anyone can guess them and forge HTTPS certs for any website.

Can someone explain what the motivation might be here? Is this purely Nietzschean (ie might makes right), or is there another motivation here? Like, it clearly looks like he's on the wrong side of history. I'm wondering whether there's some coherent reason.
WSJ: Elon Musk ordered the slowdown of the military-grade Starlink network used by Ukraine, according to U.S. officials and people familiar with the matter. Trump and Musk have both expressed anger at Ukraine for attacking Russian diesel refineries, which Trump blames for high energy prices. Last week, Musk capped the connection speeds of Ukrainian devices, rendering some attack drones and interceptor drones virtually useless.

Ben Horowitz on treating your story as your strategy, and why founders often skip writing it even though it's one of the most important parts of the job: "The story of the company is also the strategy of the company... In your mind, you're kind of adjusting that strategy a little bit at a time every day. But then a quarter later, it's actually pretty different than what you started with." "So it's really important that you keep upgrading your story. The articulation of your story. I would definitely recommend it be in written form." "Something that you can share with everybody in the company, and everybody you're recruiting, everybody you're trying to raise money from, all your constituents, every customer." "The problem that I think founders have is it doesn't feel like work. Like, 'What are you doing today?' 'I'm working on my story.' That doesn't sound like work." "Because it doesn't feel like work, people don't do it, but it's probably one of the most important parts of the job." @bhorowitz w/ @speedrun GP @Tocelot
