would i be too woke if i said “ao3 has a download button so you should be fine with people mass reposting your fics” reads almost the exact same as “if you want to avoid your shit being scraped for ai learning you should just not upload it at all”

idk guys i dont think fic authors posting sometimes whole entire book-length stories that they wrote for free is them handing you an express license to do as you see fit 🤷🏻 fic authors are allowed to be displeased with their stuff being uploaded to drive en masse and saying

some of you were literally born yesterday do you think writers don’t have backups of their work 😭😭😭 nobody asked you to preserve the shit that’s sitting in MY OWN DRIVE safe and sound

Let me be wrong, but if A03 is unable to open again, im sure they would be gracefull of not lossing their works and having collections. They are only bitching because that take A03 as a guarantee that is not

like. if you think you're that entitled to other people's fics because you have no respect for writing as a craft on the same level as fanart or any handmade work then surely you can just AI-generate your own slop instead of taking others' work. it won't make a difference to you.

the odds of some of my fics (from another fandom) being on these huge drives being passed around are not zero and the thought of them being impersonal Content™ used to scratch an itch and not the result of my time and words and creative drive under MY username DOES suck actually

its is precisely because it is fanworks that copyright is gray area we creators tread on daily basis. people reuploading without authorization means we creators lost our control on our creations. when things get out of hand, the one that takes the blame is us creators.
Copyright exists from the moment of creation. The ability to fight someone legally for monetary compensation is the one that's affected if the work isn't registered. Fics are protected by copyright law under the derivative work aspect. Authors have rights over the execution.

Not only you don't own it, since nothing is copyrighted until it's registered with the gov's copyright office, but you could never own it because the work your fic is based on is already copyrighted by someone else.
But if you believe otherwise, please try to sell it/publish it
You guys don't want fandoms. You guys want faceless content pumping machines. You guys want fellow fans to be like ai, there only to deliver fanfiction to you and nothing else. You only care about what you can consume, the humans behind the fics you claim to love are a burden.

Interestingly, AO3 does not agree with you. Source: transformativeworks.org/upda…

and can i say something else
artists can sell fanart, plushies, keychains, trinkets etc. of other people’s work/characters… but fanfic writers can’t even ask for kudos without backlash

You keep arguing that authors consented because they posted their work publicly, but that's not how consent works. They consented to publishing on a specific platform, under specific terms. They did not give every internet user unrestricted permission to redistribute their writin

hey, uh, i know you guys need your fanfics, but i don’t think we should deal them without author’s consent with the drives and also porting the site to other sites/programs. the reason ao3 got emergency maintenance was security breach and you’re… you’re just…

fanfic authors aren’t some faceless entity
they’re not a big bad corporation and you’re not “sticking it to the man”
they’re your community, they’re your fandom neighbours.
you’re just being a dick to the people who you should instead be friends with
"hey guys I don't feel comfortable with my works being shared outside of Ao3 because I feel like whatever little amount of social interaction I could've gotten out of it might be lost"
"Why are you so petit bourgeois"

if you see a writer say they're going to delete their fics and your reaction is to say "nobody cares" or tell them to do it, you really are a piece of shit and i hope all your favourite fics get deleted.
