Wonderful to hear the mighty @EricIdle on Private Passions (aka. Desert Island Discs for grown-ups) on @BBCRadio3, especially as it closed with my beloved Four Last Songs. A fine complement to his delightful, funny and moving new book. Many thanks to all involved.

Memo to the government: this is happening on your watch. There’s no clarity on funding the BBC from 2028, and it’s getting too late for radical change at that point.
A longer read on BBC cuts: -BBC not halfway to £500m goal -More radical savings required -BBC Sounds under threat? -Bosses mulled axing CBBC -1,200 of 2k layoffs confirmed -Industrial action threat lingers -Concern at charter talks urgency deadline.com/2026/10/inside-…

Marking the birthdays of two remarkable men. Colin Milburn would have been 85 today - @NorthantsCCC Hall of Fame and still a favourite player of many older supporters. And my grandfather Cyril Goodman - blacksmith, worked for the old County Borough of Northampton for 41 years.

60 years ago today, on 144 people, including 116 children, lost their lives in one of the most appalling disasters in British history. At Aberfan, a mountain of coal waste - 150,000 tonnes of liquefied slurry moving at speeds up to 80 mph - saturated by heavy rain, engulfed Pantglas Junior School & nearby homes. It was the last school day before half-term. Children who had left home that morning never returned. It was a catastrophic failure of the state. An official public inquiry placed the blame entirely on the National Coal Board (NCB). The subsequent inquiry condemned its “bungling ineptitude”. Yet not a single NCB official was prosecuted, fined or dismissed. 144 lives lost and not one individual held legally accountable. 60 years later, how much has really changed? Public inquiries remain difficult to secure, particularly when their findings risk embarrassing those in power. Too often, governments appear more concerned with managing reputational damage than confronting the real-life suffering of those failed by the institutions meant to protect them. Worse still, those responsible for institutional failures can emerge financially secure, rewarded with generous severance arrangements & pensions, while victims & their families are left to live with the consequences. Too often, protecting reputations comes before taking responsibility. As we remember the innocent victims, & the children buried on the hillside overlooking Aberfan, we must also remember the uncomfortable truth: this was a state-sponsored disaster, & those responsible escaped personal accountability. We must never forget the victims. Nor must we forget the failures that cost them their lives.

The Oval's legendary groundsman Bosser Martin cuts a sod from the pitch and hands it to Australian umpire Bob Crockett to take back home at the end of the 5th Ashes Test, August 22nd 1934. Four years later Martin's heavily doped pitch saw Australia lose by an innings and 579 runs

I would like to thank all those who have prayed for me in recent days. I wish to express my particular gratitude to the doctors, nurses and all the staff of the Gemelli Hospital. This experience has made me feel particularly close to all those who are living with illness or infirmity. Now that I have overcome this delicate phase I will gradually resume my activities, always with God’s help and your prayers.

⏰The head of the @BritishArmy has just delivered a massive wake-up call to his troops - and the whole of the UK - about the gathering storm. Please read or watch ⬇️ General Sir Roly Walker tells his soldiers: "You didn’t know this but our nation is going to need you. "Very soon the political leaders of this country will start to have a frank conversation with the citizens of this country about just what is going on and where the risk lies. "They are going to try and explain to our citizens that our citizens have got to consent to sacrifices to prioritise defence and security. "And then they are going to ask those citizens, to whom we are not necessarily at the front of their mind, that they too need to play a part in the defence and security of this country. "They need to understand what we do for them. "They need to consent to allow us to do that, which means sacrifices by them. "And ultimately we are going to need them to back us, to back you to do the one thing that you do that noody else gets to do and that is to take the fight to the enemy."
🇬🇧 Are Britons ready for the sacrifices needed to strengthen national security? Speaking to soldiers in Catterick Garrison the head of the British Army warns Britons must face a “frank conversation” about the sacrifices needed for defence and security🔗forcesnews.com/services/army…
