Absolutely. Huge shame that the world's greatest living moral philosopher, @webmasterdave, isn't taught more in a public capacity. Considering where most people are at it's not exactly unsurprising, but still.

University professors should start teaching David Pearce in their ethics and bioethics classes. If you are a philosophy professor, I recommend reading "The Hedonistic Imperative" and "Can Biotechnology Abolish Suffering?" His ideas are fascinating.

1) Abolish suffering in all sentient beings. 2) Get the whole world to read David Pearce.

David Pearce asks why we are so rare, why efficient pursuit of happiness is ignored if not downright frowned upon by most. One big reason is that it is impossible to accurately imagine valence that is significantly different (in either direction) from your current valence. We can all imagine curing cancer and building Dyson spheres, but we can not imagine being happier. So all that people have to go by is… a kind of a pre-engrained vibe of the culture they grew up in. Nothing more. And the vibe happens to be a negative one. This, I suspect, may be more or less a complete coincidence. So like, imagine someone had written a book portraying valence enhancement as good and noble instead of Brave New World… It just so happened that this topic was portrayed in a negative light by our culture, I don’t think this is intrinsic, stigmas and taboos are often completely random and nonsensical. It’s like, idk, pink is seen as feminine and blue as masculine. Why? Because reasons. It could just as easily be the other way around. Some guy wrote some book where he portrayed some unimaginable sci-fi phenomenon as bad, so now everyone thinks it’s bad.

I have something to announce. We ran a study to compare the jhānas to 5-MeO-DMT. This was an ambitious undertaking by the Qualia Research Institute @QualiaRI , friends and collaborators. For practically all of May and June, a group of handpicked extraordinary people gathered in Tepoztlán, México: physicists, psychologists, neuroscientists, phenomenologists, advanced meditators, meditation researchers, philosophers of mind, and visual artists specializing in psychedelic replication. It span over two dozen participants and eight weeks: instrument building, ten days of jhāna practice across three meditation sites, a week of 5-MeO-DMT, and then time to integrate and putting the pieces together to figure out the puzzle of consciousness. We're now releasing the first tranche of what came out of it ♥️ Here is an example output: every animation we rated (comparing J1 and J3), in a tool where you can visualize the affinity of each animation to any two pairs of specific jhāna states and/or 5-MeO-DMT dose levels. heart.qri.org/retreats/2026-…

Should predators be herbivorized or (non-violently) retired?
David Pearce's essay 'Reprogramming Predators' - a clearheaded look at the immense moral significance of wild animal suffering. I've always found it astonishing how this view is so widely ignored/condemned. It seems so beautifully reasonable! Link: abolitionist.com/reprogrammi…

philosopher david pearce's argument for "phenomenal binding" is compelling, and is one of the things that keeps me wary of false positives around machine consciousness in this clip from his Worthy Successor episode, Pearce explains "phenomenal binding" - what convinces me: -- It seems plausible that the way a sentient entity (human, dolphin, bee?, etc) develops is fundamentally different from a machine. A living organism develops outward, unfolding its interconnected parts in a way that is coherent and interconnected throughout its unfolding. -- A machine is build from pieces attached to each other. Sentience in organisms (at least within myself, I can't speak for others) seems "bound" to this "whole" coherent form of our organism, rather than existing as flickering specks of sentience inside individual cells. -- the mystery of this "bounded" experience MAY be pretty inherent to how we (as organisms) develop, and so even if little pieces of a computer chip are "sentient", it may be in flickering little bits, not as a coherent and larger "field of awareness" in the morally relevant way that we experience. i'm NOT totally convinced that this means AI is not and likely cannot be conscious - and in fact I'm less convinced by it than pearce himself. But overall it lends credence to my wariness of ppl who express total confidence that AI is consciousness today LMK what you think (and I hope you'll enjoy the rest of this episode with David)

few thinkers have influenced my work (esp my early work, 10+ years ago) as @webmasterdave. when I had NO audience, pearce read my work, occasionally referenced it, and challenged my ideas. It was a kindness I'm grateful for see his full ep :) youtube.com/watch?v=b-iARM-h…

Despite a widespread European decline in church attendance, surveys show young Westerners are more drawn to mysticism than their grandparents. | bit.ly/4t3Ol3G Will the future be one where we see a return to an open acceptance of mysticism and spirituality? David Pearce, Naomi Goulder, and Rupert Sheldrake debate.

The Hedonistic Imperative is one of the best philosophical writings ever. David Pearce is one of the most revolutionary philosophers of all time, and the fact that HI isn’t more publicly known after 30 years reflects how painfully unaware we are of a utopia’s true image
