As a high school band nerd and fan of electronica, prog rock, ai, and human creativity - this hits a bunch of buttons for me.
A few comments:
1. A bunch of people have said this is AI, or sounds electronically modified, or “too perfect”. To me it definitely sounds studio enhanced (bass drumb way too thick, too much echo for that location), but not fake. Everything you hear here is well within the range of these instruments and good players.
For example, one of the guys is rocking a *bass* sax which is quite rare and is really fattening the repeating low brass riff. The cymbals the drummer are using have holes that create that shorter splashy sound. The Marimbas played with those mallets really do sound like that and when layered over the harmonized trumpets makes them have this really cool almost electronic ringing sound.

When Olivia Rodrigo’s first-ever holiday song “take me home (4 christmas)” came out Thursday, it drew comparisons to the Waitresses’ “Christmas Wrapping.” But while some artists have received retroactive writing credit on past Rodrigo singles, it won’t be necessary this time. The Waitresses guitarist Christopher Butler, who wrote their 1981 classic, is totally cool with the homage.
Writing on Facebook when Rodrigo’s “take me home” was announced, Butler revealed that the pop star had reached out months ago to play it for him. They even met up after her show in Columbus last week. “If it has the same upbeat vibe as ‘CW’, well...how cool is that?” Butler added yesterday. “I’m a fan, and I wish her monster success with it.”
“Thank you all for the comparisons to ‘Christmas Wrapping,’” he also posted in the new song’s YouTube comments. “The vibe is there, but no plagiarism.”

With San Diego’s loss, I believe if Spirit wins, that means Gotham (if they were to advance) can play their game on Sunday the 15th instead of Saturday the 14th, mitigating the venue issue for them at RBA.
