AI should support scholarship, not replace critical thinking. PhDs with AI-generated abstracts were less likely to enter academia. A PhD must build independent thinkers. @bhlab_india @jwls_in @academia @rameshpandeyifs

It’s a good and interesting read. Kudos to team @wildwithwolves.
Introducing the first conceptual framework and testable hypotheses for land tenure in territorial carnivores, highlighting its role in population stability and responses to environmental change.
It’s time to bring land tenure into the spotlight of carnivore ecology and conservation.

Mr. Bhaskar Bhandari, a PhD Scholar at WII-AcSIR and Senior Project Associate in the Gaur Reintroduction Project, received the Best Talk Award at the 17th Student Conference on Conservation Science, New York (SCCS-NY), for his presentation titled “Social Cohesion in Reintroduced Indian Gaur in Sanjay Tiger Reserve, Madhya Pradesh.”
His ongoing research examines the influence of pre-existing familiarity and spatial proximity on social associations and herd formation among reintroduced gaur. The findings highlight the importance of social relationships in re-establishing
functional social structures and promoting social cohesion in reintroduced populations.

Congratulations to Shri Ramesh Kumar Pandey on successfully defending his Ph.D. thesis on 7 October 2026.
His doctoral research, “Beyond Tusks and Terrains: An In-depth Analysis of Human–Elephant Interactions in Contemporary India,” examined the evolving patterns of human–elephant conflict (HEC), landscape-level drivers, elephant population assessment and mitigation strategies across India.
The research adopted an integrated, multi-scale approach, combining national trends, long-term assessments in Assam, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh, and a detailed landscape-level study in Udalguri. A key finding was that HEC is not determined by elephant population size alone, but is strongly associated with habitat fragmentation, landscape configuration, land-use change and increasing human–elephant interactions.
The thesis also evaluated elephant population estimation methods and the effectiveness of existing conflict mitigation measures, highlighting the need for scientifically robust monitoring, habitat connectivity, community participation and region-specific management interventions.
Together, the research provides a comprehensive scientific framework for understanding human–elephant interactions in India and advancing evidence-based, landscape-specific conservation strategies that promote long-term human–elephant coexistence.

Continuing our celebration of the WildlifeWeek2026, inaugurated the newly developed Ramdevra Rewilding Aviary for Great Indian Bustards (GIB) virtually from Jodhpur along with Rajasthan Chief Minister Shri @BhajanlalBjp ji.
On this momentous occasion, we initiated the rewilding of GIBs in Sam, Desert National Park, Jaisalmer. This marks the culmination of a decade of dedicated efforts, concerted action and scientific pursuit towards the conservation of this iconic species.
Following the clarion call of Hon’ble PM Shri @narendramodi ji, India continues to further its species conservation programmes with the goal of ecosystem protection and restoration.

A historic day for wildlife conservation in India. Sir, your guidance, unwavering support and deep understanding of conservation continue to inspire us. Your vision strengthens our resolve to turn such milestones into a lasting legacy for India’s wildlife.
In a milestone move, released two male Great Indian Bustards in Sam, Desert National Park, Jaisalmer, today morning.
This landmark success has been made possible by the nearly decade-long unwavering dedication of our scientists, researchers and ground staff who have spent years to ensure GIB reclaims the deserts of Rajasthan.
I thank PM Shri @narendramodi ji for his continued guidance, encouragement and constant support in ensuring our scientific community can work for the conservation of all our species, including the GIB.

Congratulations to Tushar Parab on successfully defending his Ph.D. thesis.
His doctoral research, “Biogeography, Compositional Turnover, Morphology & Vocal Complexity of Phylloscopus”, supervised by Dr Salvador Lyngdoh and co-supervised by Sandeep K. Gupta examined the global diversity and evolutionary history of Phylloscopus warblers.
The thesis included the first biogeographic study to consider all Phylloscopus warblers worldwide, reconstructing their geographic history and investigating the origin and evolution of migratory behaviour. It also explored compositional turnover across regions, variation in vocalisations, and morphological classification.
Together, the work provides an integrated view of how Phylloscopus warblers have diversified, dispersed, evolved migration, and differentiated in form and voice across the world. 🐦🌍
