#OnThisDay 221 yrs ago in 1805 @RoyalNavy was successful in defeating the Franco-Spanish Fleet at #Trafalgar confirming British superiority of the seas. Lord Nelson died before the end, having done his duty, handing over Command to another great commander Admiral Collingwood.

Sneaked out of the office to the memorial service in the crypt of St.Pauls. The bugles in those acoustics gave me goosebumps. #trafalgarday

The #Volgograd Panorama Museum from the Volga river, image captured on #VictoryDay 2002. To the right of the museum (the round building), the red brick ruins are the remains of a flour mill. Beyond that one can just make out the roof line of a building built on the site of the famous House of Pavlov. Part of the original structure is preserved in the newer construction. If there is a location where the tide turned for the Wehrmacht during #WW2 then this riverside enclave would surely qualify #Stalingrad

On this day - at 10:20 in the morning, 16 October 1970, two of Clevedon Pier's eight spans collapsed during a load test. On hearing about this calamity, local man Ralph Fryer went home and picked up his cine camera. He recorded the scene on Clevedon beach before heading down to Clevedon Pill, and then returning to the pier aboard his boat in order to capture close up shots of the damaged structure. This is the footage that Ralph shot, now safely preserved in the South West Film and TV Archive @clevedonpier youtu.be/Y2UDp7NpXFU?si=55W1… – at Clevedon, England

After being recovered near St Julien in 2021, the remains of a British soldier have been identified through DNA analysis as Lance-Corporal Claude Stanley Dell of the Yorkshire Regiment.
Today he was laid to rest at Poelcapelle British Cemetery in the presence of his relatives.
In 1998 the acclaimed motor racing photographer #LouisKlemantaski visited Birnbeck Pier with two other DMWD (Wheezers & Dodgers) veterans. He sketched out sites near Weston-super-Mare that were used for secret weapons testing during #WW2. I used @ChatGPT to create an interactive @googlemaps and here it is: google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1…
When the Department of Miscellaneous Weapons Development (the Wheezers and Dodgers) requisitioned #BirnbeckPier in 1941, there was an immediate need for various types of boats for ordnance retrieval, the placement of marker buoys and the movement of equipment and personnel. Quite a few vessels were requisitioned locally and a Weston-super-Mare engineering company, Crowe and Green, was taken on to maintain them. There are some interesting artefacts from HMS Birnbeck (the DMWD ‘Wheezers and Dodgers’) on display at Weston-super-Mare Museum - including part of a ‘Parachute and Cable’ rig (PAC). This was a defensive system used to ensnare Luftwaffe aircraft during attacks on Allied merchant shipping #BirnbeckPier
