I’m levitating today in the warm afterglow of a left-wing surge in my home city of Vancouver! Democratic socialists and progressives united to take on the power of big money and the politics of fear and division. The parties were strategic in agreeing on a fixed number of candidates, and narrowed the field for one progressive mayoralty candidate. This was key – working together across differences is what’s needed in these scary political times. Congrats to @COPEVancouver, @OneCityVan, and the @VanGreens: it wasn’t always easy, but it worked. Cheers and flowers for all the candidates and volunteers who threw down hard on the ground game: this is how we build power from below! People organized relentlessly for a city government for the 99% – and they *won*. Today Vancouver belongs to the many, not the money. Stelco workers in Hamilton are being laid off *right now*. They can’t afford to wait through a years-long court battle, and neither can our steel industry. We have to act now to protect Canadian jobs and assert public control in this strategic sector — for our sovereignty and economic security. That means nationalizing Stelco.

Canada cannot afford to lose its steel industry. It's time to nationalize Stelco. Stelco’s American owners have broken their commitments. Their CEO supports Trump’s tariffs, which are designed to deindustrialize our economy and destroy our manufacturing base. More than 500 workers in Hamilton are facing layoffs. Plus tôt cette semaine, le premier ministre Mark Carney a annoncé son intention de privatiser les plus grands aéroports du Canada. Du coup, je suis allé à YVR pour demander aux Canadien·nes ce qu’ils en pensent (divulgâcheur : ils ne partagent pas du tout son enthousiasme).

Earlier this week, Prime Minister Carney announced his plans to privatize Canada’s largest airports. So, I went to YVR to ask Canadians what they think (spoiler: they don’t share his enthusiasm).

La privatisation des aéroports est une très mauvaise affaire pour les voyageurs, les travailleurs et les finances publiques. Partout dans le monde, elle a entraîné une hausse des frais de service, une diminution du nombre d’emplois et une détérioration des conditions de travail. Les barons du capital privé et les gestionnaires de fonds en raffolent! Une fois en place, ils détiennent une part d’un monopole naturel et impriment de l’argent pendant des décennies. C'est une erreur qu'on doit éviter. L’alternative à la privatisation de nos aéroports, c’est de NE PAS LE FAIRE.

Privatizing airports is a terrible deal for travellers, workers, and the public purse. Around the world, it has led to higher travel costs, fewer jobs and worse working conditions. Private equity moguls and fund managers love it! Once they’re in, they own a piece of a natural monopoly, and they print money for decades. This is a mistake we do not need to make. The alternative to privatizing our airports is to NOT DO IT.
