The idea that @Alphaschool students don't read books is just anti-AI propoganda.
I lead @alpha_founders, one of the Alpha high schools.
We have a dedicated 30 minute block after lunch each day to read books, and students finish one every ~2 weeks for a group discussion or workshop.
Last one was Meditations, current one is Never Split the Difference. There's plenty of reading.
What some people get confused is that we do use apps which deliberately push a student's reading level through carefully structured passages, since those allow us to be highly tactical in advancing their reading level in a way normal reading cannot do.
But then we ALSO have normal reading. It's not either or.

there's probably more alpha in reading real books than ever before, especially for children

My two oldest go to Alpha. My middle schooler read Tempest & Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde last year as part of his work and is an avid reader. This idea that they don’t read is just wrong.
The teachers (called guides) are core to the school, they just don’t stand in front and lecture academics.

My kid is so happy with every guide and workshop lead he spends time with at GT Anywhere (a virtual version of Alpha School).
His guide is genuinely invested in his success and well-being.

This is so great! My kids do GT Anywhere, and it really is the guides and staff that make it amazing for them. The ed tech frees them up to focus on the kids and what makes them tick.

My two oldest started Alpha in September. It's too early to know if they're learning at 2x speed, but they definitely love school. They complain if we take them out for a dentist appointment or a wedding.
My deep dive on the "A.I.-driven" Alpha School, revealing their internal learning and enrollment data for the first time, just as the network expands into public education.
There is a big gap between the marketing and reality.

Last night, I found my 5 yo daughter at the kitchen sink using our meat thermometer to measure the difference in temperatures between two bowls of water. She'd pour them together, then measure after.
She told me she "wanted to test a hypothesis she had about hot and cold water". Her words, not mine.
She then wanted to see if her hypothesis held true with fluids other than water. And on the experiment went...
She explained how she's working on a new science module at @Alphaschool about setting and testing hypotheses.
Her natural curiosity is on fire! She's thriving and loving school more than I thought possible.
Does your child love school? If yes, is it just because of their friend group?
The most common parental objection I hear is that their child wouldn't want to leave their friends.
Both of my daughters loved their friend groups, but had zero interest in school. My 7th grader despised school so much, that she opted into @Alphaschool just so she wouldn't have to do homework.
Eight weeks into @Alphaschool and my daughter is upset at me for making her turn her computer off in the evening while she's trying to get extra school work done.
Meanwhile, she has even more free time to see her friends, after school, on more sports teams, and on weekends.

Perhaps the most important detail:
I've actually been at @Alphaschool for 10 months, and I already have my second app in classrooms.
As that sinks in, please consider the possibility that you, and most of the online commentators, don't know everything there is to know about what's happening in our schools.

I’m so shocked with my four-year-old and how much she loves it. Wasn’t sure how it was going to go in the beginning given her age but her love of school has genuinely surprised me.

My kids are 6 weeks into @Alphaschool Park City and my primary takeaway so far is I'm mostly jealous this didn't exist when I was a kid.

Sometimes I can't believe the lives I get to reach. I gave a talk at a space camp this summer, and the kids made sure to let me know how much my presentation had meant. Came home to artwork & a 3D printed astronaut-mermaid - thanks @Alphaschool ! 🧜🏽♀️🚀👩🏽🚀✨️

I introduced a bunch of the @alpha_founders kids to my colleague to work for us.
He just called me, “Who are these kids? These are some of the most impressive kids I’ve ever met.”
Going to be such a premium for going to this school.

Yesterday at Alpha Showcase, my “shy” 7 year old spoke in front of 180 adults, then demonstrated what she learned in her BJJ workshop in this first session of @AlphaSchool.
If you told past me that she’d be acing public speaking in just a few weeks, I wouldn’t believe you.

Me: “What are paint colors for?”
Daughter: “My school sends us a survey to ask if we have any suggestions to make it better. I said I wish we had a quiet area for testing, and recommended a quiet booth.”
Me: “So they’re having someone build a quiet booth?”
Daughter: “No, they gave us wood and tools and said they’d help us. It took a while to finish framing it and the walls, they had a handyman do the door though. We still need to finish the roof, interior, and paint.”
This is what learning looks like at Alpha School South Bay LA. My 7th grade daughter started off with a 3rd grade reading test to start off school. Passed (90%+). Then passed 4th.
But she must have had a gap at 5th grade (tested at 80%). So she spent 6 days catching up and filling gaps, and then passed 5th. Passed 6th the next day.
Now she’s working on 7th grade reading. It wouldn’t surprise me if she gets up to 8th or 9th in reading this year.
That said, she’s still way behind in the other subjects. Our supposedly blue ribbon public schools failed us.
Opening and progress this year:
Math: 4th
Fast Math: 3rd / TBD - she has passed every level so far
Reading: 5th -> 7th
Language: 4th -> 5th
Vocabulary: 4th -> 6th
Science: 3rd -> 4th

This weekend, Alpha and Founders School begin a series of 50+ Weekend events nationwide through the rest of 2026.
Themes span the entrepreneurial stack: launching businesses and earning a first dollar, shipping apps to the App Store, creating video games people play, robotics and hard-tech intros, YouTube and other creator tracks. Pathways that turn building into something real.
Founders School exists to help millions of students develop entrepreneurial spirit and the capability to create value through business while pursuing what makes them come alive. We’re starting with a few thousand over the next couple of months.
First up: Founders Weekend in 10 cities, Saturday and Sunday.
Can't wait to stop by Austin and Miami this weekend to hang with the coolest young founders.

They also offer a GT virtual school, which opened this fall. My kid is enrolled and loves it. We were in the spring pilot and that experience convinced us to switch from his old school. anywhere.gt.school/.
