Delighted to be in conversation with my colleagues from the Council of Presidents of the UN General Assembly @uncpga yesterday, on the margins of #UNGA81, to discuss the challenges of artificial intelligence and the future of multilateralism.
Nearly two years ago, in our Seoul Declaration, we recognized the opportunities and challenges of rapidly evolving artificial general intelligence.
As Council, we remain committed to this work. We must anticipate risks, preserve human agency, and ensure that all countries can help shape technological change and share in its benefits.

As US Ambassador to NATO on 9/11, the first to call me to suggest we invoke Article 5 was Canadian Ambassador David Wright. Our allies came to our rescue that terrible day. I’ll call David this morning 25 years later to thank him and our great neighbor Canada once again!

Yesterday, I had the privilege of visiting Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, D.C.
In these rooms, delegates from the four Allied powers met from August 21 to October 7, 1944, during the Second World War, to draft a blueprint for what would become the United Nations.
Walking through the historic room where those discussions took place during one of humanity’s darkest hours was a profound reminder that even in the most difficult geopolitical circumstances, dialogue and cooperation remain possible.
If visionary leadership in 1944 helped lay a shared foundation for global peace, we can and must rebuild trust, adapt the United Nations to today’s realities, and respond effectively to current challenges.
We are grateful to @CongBoyle for all he consistently does to promote reconciliation and equality in Northern Ireland
He is one outstanding Irish American!

Writing for @chambrepa this week, I argue that now is the time for our politicians to make the tough decisions, & stand on our own two feet.
Revenue-raising is no longer a discomforting last resort, it is a necessity that the survival of our public services will teeter on.

HUGE thanks to @PeteKlenow who advised and supported us on this paper from day 1!
How flexible are firms' input mixes in the long run? Using India's 1990s trade reforms, we estimate high substitutability across materials (elasticity ~2.5) and show input distortions cut output 3.5x more than prior work suggests. @Ale_M_Peter @cian_ruane

I can almost hear my old friend David Dollar responding to this incredulously by asking, "Well, what did you think was going to happen?" Outside of the MAGA-verse, this was a predicted and predictable outcome.
Implication of all this, of course, is that the big fall in the bilateral deficit that the Trump Administration trumpets as one of the successes of tariffs isn't real -- as the Chinese goods just enter after taking a one stop flight through other jurisdictions

Very fruitful meeting with H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission. We shared a vision for a stronger AU–UN partnership, one that advances peace and security, accelerates #Agenda2063, and places Africa at the heart of global solutions.
The next UNSG must help renew the promise of the @UN and inspire a new era of effective, inclusive and trusted multilateralism.

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission @ymahmoudali met with H.E. María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés, Antigua and Barbuda’s candidate for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations.
They exchanged views on the future of multilateralism, the AU–UN partnership, and the importance of ensuring that Africa’s priorities are fully reflected in the work of the United Nations. @UN

"Being a working mum carries challenges in any profession. Perhaps one distinct feature of economics is that, with so few women at the top, those starting out are mostly flying solo."
Thank you, @juli_caunedo, for sharing your story and making it feel less like flying solo.
This week, we hear from the amazing @juli_caunedo. Her piece is a beautiful blend of personal story, reflection on the profession, and words of encouragement & advice for the younger generation.
"Asking for accommodations through childbearing is not asking for charity or compassion. It is asking for the opportunity to bear the costs of pregnancy without giving up our passion or our ideas. As a profession, we should ask how much talent is lost when women — biologically the ones who carry pregnancies — feel cornered into choosing between family and professional advancement."

Thank you for the support, @AEACSWEP!
🚨We’re thrilled to share that One Extra Year has received a generous grant from @AEACSWEP! 🚨
Alongside the personal stories at the heart of the project, we’ll use this support to collect data on policies on parental leave, tenure-clock extensions, and teaching relief across econ departments in the U.S. and Europe. 📈📊📉
We’ll soon publish the resulting data in an accessible & visually engaging format to help
- departments compare their policies with peer institutions
- researchers understand the broader landscape
- the profession identify where change is most needed
We’re deeply grateful to @AEACSWEP for supporting this next phase of One Extra Year. Stay tuned!
