The reason people are so excited and impressed by Elon’s flying car, despite its impracticability, is that it’s one of the first times in recent memory of a physical innovation. Not another app, not another software, not another chatbot, a real three dimensional thing that changes how we interact with the physical world. I think this is what the irritation with tech has been for many “luddites” of late, it all seems to be pulling us into a screen. Whereas Elon’s invention seems to be finally doing the opposite. If you’re building things in the real world too, even if it’s paintings, cashmere sweaters, books or sculptures, you’ll appreciate this.

With 24 hours left to go on the ShadowSun Revised Kickstarter campaign, we are at 1,224 backers. Thanks to everyone that has been a part of this campaign. Here is my final pitch ShadowSun presents you with a setting packed with unbridled evils to fight, deeply challenging moral questions, and no judgment of what content might be "too much" for you to handle. Don't take my word for it either, check out the 144 page free quickstart. The full books will let players begin with knowledge from a generous gazetteer, surrounded by a vast unforgiving surface world, with a dark, terrifying underworld beneath their feet. Use new unique mechanics and tools designed to make GMing easy, with innovations on the base ShadowDark structure like caravan travel, brewing customized alcohols, and world-spanning cataclysms. Both books are done and in editing. They will be ready for PDF release in a couple of weeks when Kickstarter gives me a confirmed backer list, then I will proceed to proofs & print after that. kickstarter.com/projects/chu…

The original STAR WARS (1977) poster art by the Brothers Hildebrandt. This is actually a fascinating piece of STAR WARS history. The Hildebrandts created their version of the artwork for early newspaper advertising and retail posters, while Tom Jung’s more famous composition became the official U.S. Style A one-sheet. The Hildebrandt artwork helped shape the visual identity of STAR WARS before the film had even become the cultural phenomenon it would eventually be.

Animation for the first season of Thundercats for Rankin/Bass, including the series’ incredible intro seen below, was by the Tokyo-based studio Topcraft. In 1985, Topcraft went bankrupt and its assets and animators became Studio Ghibli, under Miyazaki, Suzuki, and Takahata.

Y Tony Banks. Me muero; es “One For The Vine”. open.spotify.com/track/70GJ8…

Apparently I was being optimistic... For modern play so focused on heroic arcs and grand destinies, removing slavery from Dark Sun is absurd. What greater heroic cause is there than freeing people from bondage and bringing down the tyrants who profit from it?
Replying to @CorpseKings
Dark Sun has always been the ‘metal album cover’ of D&D. Any WotC reboot of it now would just be more protest through an imaginary game world.

One month after September 11, workers clearing the rubble at Ground Zero found something alive. A tree. Eight feet of blackened stump. Roots snapped. Every branch broken but one. They could have thrown it away with the rest. Nobody would have noticed. They did not. It was a Callery pear. Nobody had ever paid attention to it. It had been planted in the 1970s in the plaza between Buildings 4 and 5 of the World Trade Center, one of dozens of ornamental trees the Port Authority put in to make the concrete feel less like concrete. Office workers ate lunch under it. Tourists walked past it on their way to the observation deck. On the morning of September 11, a hundred and ten stories fell on it. Twice. In October, on the pile, someone saw a single living branch sticking out of the wreckage. Green. Still trying. A decision was made on the spot. They dug it out. The city's Parks Department took the stump to a nursery in Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. The horticulturists there looked at it and were not optimistic. The trunk was charred. The root system was mostly gone. Trees in that condition do not usually come back. They went to work anyway. They cleaned the burns. They trimmed the dead wood. They set it in good soil. They watered it. And they waited. That first spring, in 2002, against everything the experts expected, the stump put out blossoms. Small white flowers, on a tree that had been under the World Trade Center six months earlier. It stayed in the Bronx for nine years. Relearning how to be a tree. Growing new branches out of the old scarred wood. Getting taller. Filling out. In 2010, weeks before it was finally scheduled to go home, a storm tore through the nursery and ripped it out of the ground. The people who had been nursing it for nine years came out the next morning and found it on its side, roots exposed again. They stood it back up. They repacked the soil. It survived that too. On December 22, 2010, it was replanted at the 9/11 Memorial in lower Manhattan, a few steps from where the South Tower had stood. Where it had been found. The eight-foot stump is now more than thirty feet tall. Walk up to it and look at the trunk. There is a line on it. Below the line, the bark is dark and gnarled and twisted. That is the wood from 2001. Above the line, the bark is smooth and pale and new. That is everything that grew after. The tree does not hide the line. It does not cover it over. The scar is right there, and the whole rest of the tree grows up and out of it. People tie tags to the railing around it. Prayers. Names. Messages to the dead. Every spring it is the first thing on the entire plaza to bloom. It goes white before the other trees have even leafed. In 2013, the Memorial started a program. They gathered seedlings from the Survivor Tree, and every year they sent them to a community that had just had its own worst day. Newtown, Connecticut, after Sandy Hook. Orlando, after Pulse. Puerto Rico, after Maria. Paris. Manchester. London. A small tree from the rubble of the World Trade Center, planted in the ground of the next place that thought it would never grow anything again. Twenty-five years ago this month, a hundred and ten stories of steel came down on a pear tree and someone on the pile saw one green branch and said, not that one. Not that one. The last living thing pulled out of Ground Zero has children now, growing all over the world. It did not survive by being untouched. It survived by growing out of the wound. 🌸

Charisma checks aren’t about how engaging your player-character is. They’re about how much the GM wants to deal with your bullshit. The great paradox of CHA checks & communication skills (like Orate, Fast Talk, Persuade, etc.) is that if you are trying to talk your way past a guard, and roll a CHA check to do it, then the result is bloodless and dull. It's anti-roleplay. Shouldn't you play it out? On the other hand, what use is a high CHA or Persuade skill if it DOESN'T help your character ihn these situations? We don't make the player prove he's strong by lifting the sofa instead of a STR check, so why do we make some gamer with beginner social skills schmooze the DM? Here is what I do as a DM. I always make the player make some feeble attempt to trick or amuse me as the NPC. Then, AFTER he makes his attempt, he gets to try his CHA check or Communication skill. I'll adjust the player's results based on two factors. How impressive was the attempt? Was I amused or half-convinced? Usually for me this is based on a clever argument, rather than flowery words. I do "grade on the curve" and an introverted player gets judged more kindly. EXAMPLE FROM ACTUAL PLAY: the party was arrested trying to break into a judge's house. Then they got hauled into court before the SAME JUDGE. The player in chief claimed that she was the judge's third cousin who'd come to visit, and that they'd talked to his mom and she said not to wake him when they showed up, just sneak into his guest bedroom. I was stunned by her audacity and gave her a bonus to her CHA check. Yes it was stupid, but it was also ballsy and would clearly lead to future shenanigans. I also affect the level of success by their initial speech. This applies to both successes & failures. If the player did a lousy job convincing me, then a CHA failure is a disaster and a CHA success is limited. If the player did a great job in his dialog, then a CHA failure is a partial success, and a CHA success is a victory. I have used this system for four decades, and honed it in the difficult environment of Call of Cthulhu, in which interaction, interrogation, and fast-talk are even more vital than in D&D. The adventure to me is the player gets to roleplay AND his ability affects the outcome, but his CHA or communication skill also affects the outcome. Everything matters, and it's easy to implement. Add your own solutions & suggestions below.

Ok so here's my issue with it. Slavery is extremely common throughout world history. Many people today of all races have ancestors who were slaves. There are an estimated 50 million people who are enslaved today in 2026. As Marky said, films, books, and video games talk about this subject freely. Fallout 3 let you kill slavers or side with them (iirc it's been a while since I played). Yet I've been called racist for exploring the subject in my campaign, despite the fact that race wasn't even part of the slave trade in my game. It's exhausting to be told the subjects we can and can't talk about in games. "It could trigger trauma in some people" yeah well dark sun isn't *for* everyone and people are explicitly warned about this before they purchase. Hundreds of millions of people throughout history were slaves and it's better that we're allowed to talk about it. Idk if it's the "lazy" approach, that's probably something that varies based on the exact media and how it works in the setting.

"We can appeal to a new audience by turning this thing into something it never was" has never been a successful strategy. All you do is end up alienating the old fans while either failing to attract new ones, or attracting fake "fans" who latch onto it briefly as a fad.

My brother went off to college around '87, so I "confiscated" his books and started reading them. Started my first D&D group as soon as I got to junior high in '92. Still playing with that group to this day. Although there are few original members left.
