when i was 3 or 4 i got separated from my family at an amusement park and a man found me and helped reunite me with them. however, he was an elvis impersonator and did not break character the entire time and i’ve been terrified of elvis ever since
Does anyone else have trauma that's objectively kind of funny

this and the following in the thread are unreasonable and unworkable. You can only do so much by repeatedly having 'the talk' with potential grad students and are asking for something to be communicated that you note cannot be grasped in "the fullest, deepest, most vital sense."
Replying to @ghostowlredux
You can say, "Well, you, like all young people in college, were an adult and understood what you were getting into," to which I'd respond: We need to distinguish between understanding abstractly and understanding concretely:

I don't think it's a failure of faculty mentors that they don't manage to kill the little voice in your head that makes exceptions for yourself. Plenty of students think "Yes yes the job market is awful and getting a job is mostly luck... but it'll be ok for me :) "

It's also asking for mentors to somehow convince you that you're currently not taking seriously how much you might change in 4, 5, 6+ years such that the illusion above about everything working out for you somehow may affect your life.

Crunchwrap supreme
Thinking about things like "notary public," "body politic," phrases where English puts the modifier after the noun like a Romance language. There must be some other examples

AI companies be like: We are going to fund a UBI 🤗🤗. Or kill you 👉👈.
We’re committing a portion of Anthropic’s shares to the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a new wholly owned entity dedicated entirely to the public benefit. It will start off with 5% of our shares. For every 50% increase in the company’s value over a set baseline, we can contribute up to an extra 2%, subject to our board’s discretion. In total, this means that roughly 20% of Anthropic’s shares are committed to the public good. Our co-founders have already pledged to donate 80% of their equity, and around half our employees are donating a portion of their equity as part of a donation matching program we’ve run since our founding. In the post below, we share more details about our new fund. anthropic.com/news/public-be…

"Lisa, a guy who has lots of ivory is less likely to hurt Stampy than a guy whose ivory supplies are low” is amazing Homer Logic
Little girl, I've had lots of jobs in my day. Whale hunter, seal clubber, president of the Fox network. And, like most people, yeah, I've dealt a little ivory.

name one genre or tradition that your comment is not true of
99.5% of all Soviet art was utter, insufferable garbage. 0.95% is unknown to the rest of the world. The remaining 0.05% was produced against all odds, survived against all odds, and that's what the Western commies hail as "the great Soviet art"

i tried scrivener but it didn't work with zotero and i've never paid for word (free sub as a student/faculty or pirated) so who cares
absolutely insane to me that people will write entire, 200+ page dissertations in Microsoft Word

I think people seriously underestimate how much restraint is actually baked into western military doctrine. the US genuinely fight their enemies like they’re spanking kids.
